So, pretty much what he did with Mission Impossible ... if the character doesn't fit Tom Cruise, then change the character so that it does. Except in the case of MI it was achieved by turning Jim Phelps into a traitor and introducing somebody called 'Ethan Hunt', who was, conveniently, the right size and build for Tom Cruise to play.
