Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

funnily enough all this was said when Mr Cruise got the part of the vampire lestat.

Ann Rice the author of the book actually took out an advert publically condemning the decision to cast cruise.

After see saw the film she retracted her complaints.

I would always reserve judgement until I had seen the movie.

Re: Jack Reacher film

The trailer is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK7y8Ou0VvM .

I'll be honest, the trailer does make the film look like a competent action film, and I do think that Cruise *can* be a good actor (although I find him more believable as the bad guy than a hero). I also don't necessarily have a problem with a small person beating up people larger than them (I watched Buffy the Vampire slayer beat up many vampires larger than her), as long as the fight is at least believable.

However, some of the books are quite good thrillers, or even whodunits (in the case of The Visitor). This is what I like about them, and the trailer makes it look like the film totally misses that.
It looks like it is a competent action film, but

I've seen the trailer. It was enough.Remember the trailer of a film always consists of the best parts..not the worst.

I thought Tom Cruise was wonderfully evil as Lestat.

Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

Just finished the first book (bit late getting a start on the Jack Reacher series) & now I will be having trouble envisaging TC as Reacher.
Lets face it Cruise is a flexible actor but short in stature & Reacher is a character who is larger than life, big in stature & able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Cruise will probably be quite good in the roll for those who have not read any of the books & for those that have read them he would be totally wrong.

Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

Hi all, if there's an introduction page on this forum I apologise, but I did a google on TC being cast as JR (not the Dallas one) and I ended up here. So you get my drivel;;

What the fook is the short, stumpy, goofy, dwarflike ham, being cast as Jack Reacher for??

The first plausible candidate I came up with was Steven Seagal, because he is over 6' and over 200lb's and he can do the moves.

That's from a brit who thinks the best about US special forces is the ability to miss your own troops with friendly fire ;-)

Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

Whilst I agree that at face value TC seems a rather ... odd choice (I have read most of the JR books) apparently Lee Childs (the author) said he was ok with TC as he felt that whilst TC didn't have the frame he had the attitude, and to him that was more important, moreover he didn't think that anyone out there in acting land with the right physique would be able to pull off Reachers very specific attitude.

So I dunno, time will tell, I suspect as in all things that at least 3/4 of the film audience won't have even read any of the JR novels, and could care less - PROVIDED Mr Cruise does a good performance, similar in fact to how all the Constantine fans were up in arms because Keanu Reeves version of John Constantine was nothing like he graphics novels, I hadn't read them, and I loved the film.

I agree

From what i can remember the biggest criticism of the 1st lord of the rings film after it had been released was that it didn't seem to have an ending, proving that a large proportion of the audience had not read any of the books .
Sometimes that is a good thing though as people don't have any preconceived ideas of what the main characters are supposed to be like giving film makers greater freedom .On the other hand ,using the lord of the rings as an example those who have read everything JR tolien ever wrote ,like myself noticed that the films had missed so much out it should have been 4 films to stay true to the books .So it is swings and roundabouts ,film makers have a budget and must make some changes to appeal to the widest audience and lets face it every film Tom Cruise has been in has been a success as far as i know

Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

Saw it last night.

It was OK but Tom Cruise has nowhere near the stature to make fight scenes appear realistic and the film, and potential franchise, would have been better served with a more imposing actor in the role.

Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

I suppose the new game could be who would you pick as Jack Reacher and again having read the books if Clint was a bit younger he would have been one choice. Today's actor? well Hugh Jackman springs to mind or Gerard Butler maybe.

I'll open it up to the floor :-)

Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

I've seen some people suggest that Ray Stevenson could have been a good choice. He played Titus Pullo in Rome and Isaak Sirko in the latest season of Dexter.

Re: Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher

I thought to have suggested Timothy Olyphant but he is only 6ft although he is a superior actor than Tom Cruise. However I think I prefer him to continue in Justified.

The problem is that there aren't many excellent imposing actors of the right age and 6.5 in height who spring to mind.
