Load my DVDs onto my iPad
We recently acquired a 64GB iPad (version 1) and amongst other things would like to use it to keep the kids entertained on long car journeys.
They have a rather massive DVD collection already - can anyone tell me the best way to get a selection of them onto the iPad, in much the same way as we have a selection of our CDs on there via iTunes?
And preferably a method that doesn't cost money!
TIA!

Re: Load my DVDs onto my iPad
Thanks Mick ... I did a bit of Googling and am only slightly the wiser about them.
Handbrake seems straightforward enough but MacTheRipper isn't. There is a very old, but widely available version of it with compatibility back to OSX 10.2 ... I want to try to find confirmation that it will still sit nicely in Snow Leopard 10.6 before trying to run it. Alternatively there is 4.1 which seems to be some sort of unofficial community project supported by 'donations', and 4.0 which seems to be the last community version you didn't have to 'donate' to get a licence key for.
I think I've got the most up-to-date, free-to-use version of MTR ... 4.0.31 ... however the download page referred me to a couple of additional libraries to install and I don't quite know what to do with them, nor do I even know if I should trust them.
Lew ... HELP!

Re: Load my DVDs onto my iPad
2.6.6 (linked in Mick's post) works just fine in Snow Leopard. That's the version I'm using.

Re: Load my DVDs onto my iPad
Thanks for the reassurance. does it manage most DVDs you try to rip with it?

I use Videora Apple TV converter - it is available for both Mac and PC, and is free.

It won't rip any DVD your Mac won't play, so unless you've managed to flash your optical drive to RPC1 firmware so that you can change the region code at will then it'll only rip region 2 DVDs. Other than that the only discs it won't work with for me are DVD-RW discs from my Sony DVR, but as they're not encrypted I can just copy the VOB files directly in the Finder, and Handbrake works just fine with individual VOBs.

Re: Load my DVDs onto my iPad
Right, well, as I genuinely only want to rip DVDs I own, to play on a different device that I also own, I'm not worried about the region code in the Mac's DVD player. All our DVDs are Region 2.
I have downloaded MacTheRipper v2.6.6 and have followed instructions to rip one of the kids' DVDs, minus its bonus features, audio description etc. It looks like it will take another 20 minutes or so to complete. After that I'll have a go at using Handbrake.
Presumably once Handbrake has trans-coded it, I use iTunes to get the video file into the iPad?

Re: Load my DVDs onto my iPad
Correct. Handbrake has a preset to create files optimised for the iPad so as long as you use that you should be OK.
