The "Daily Wail" Effect? Luckily, OFCOM were having none of it!
(Mods. Sorry. Wasn't sure if I should put this in here or the more general "current affairs" forum. I think the more relevant one but feel free to move it if you like!)
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s103/...-explicit.html
Quote:
"Ofcom has ruled that performances by Rihanna and Christina Aguilera on The X Factor final were not in breach of guidelines.
The pair attracted complaints for their respective performances on the ITV1 show in December. The official response today confirmed that 2,868 complaints had been received, with a majority concerned that the routines had been "too sexually explicit" for what is perceived to be "a family show".
|
Which is all well and good. But this is the interesting bit.

However, Ofcom revealed that "approximately 2,000" of the complaints had been received following coverage of Rihanna and Aguilera's performances in the Daily Mail. It highlighted that the report had featured a number of stills which were "significantly more graphic and close-up" than the material that had been broadcast on the programme, and that were "taken from a different angle to the television cameras".
|
For reference, the original article is here.
Now isn't that just completely and utterly wrong on any level? Fine, if you actually watched and felt the need to complain. But to complain after being manipulated by the press after they print pictures that weren't even in the original broadcast?
Of course, the exact same thing happen with the Ross/Brand issue. The original two complaints spiralled after a Daily Wail article.
I never liked the DM before. I like it even less now! I'm wondering if a complaint to the PCC would have any affect? Probably not!

A while back, I described the Mail as an "insidious hate-filled rag" and I stick by the description. This isn't the first time it has attacked TV or Radio in that way. As you say, the Ross/Brand affair had much the same effect, and the Daily Mail has frequently attacked the BBC for various things.
The most hateful, however, was against Steven Gately.
Unfortunately, I don't think the Mail has received any actual punishment for any of it.

The daily mail is a joke need we say more. Its product is aimed at a low IQ audience, Its stories are written by low IQ writers and is in my opinion the mouthpiece of the English defence league and to a lesser degree the bnp. It will attack the BBC and other news providers simply because they show time and time again how inaccurate the Mail is on anything they publish.
I know someone who is a member of the English Defence League and he quotes from the mail like it is the fountain of all knowledge

Indeed - it is only a pity that the people who think it's the be all and end all don't realise how stupid it makes them look when they quote from it.

Love this site. Could it be what the hacks at the fail use.
