Abbey Road Zebra Crossing Gets Its Stripes
Abbey Road Zebra Crossing Gets Its Stripes
Quote:
A zebra crossing in London that became a Mecca for Beatles fans after it featured on one of their album covers has been given "listed" status.
Thousands of people, including other bands, have recreated the photograph of the Fab Four walking across Abbey Road more than 40 years ago.
Now the site has been given Grade II status by the heritage minister John Penrose - a status normally given to buildings.

I cannot believe they bothered, considering it isn't even the same crossing featured in the photo
The original zebra crossing, where the photograph was taken, was moved several metres for traffic management reasons more than 30 years ago, and no original features remain.

Maybe they should use some of the money from those 1.3 billion sales to look after it then.

i would imagine that the tax paid on the sales (some in the uk) and the interest it generates would more than cover the cost of a zebra crossing or two!

I have no idea what a "Heritage Minister" does for a living, but with the current state of affairs we could do without someone in Westminster whose only job is to look at a zebra crossing and be paid out of our coffers to make such a decision.
The Beatles were a successful pop group from a bygone age. Made their money and paid their taxes. So what? Pity we don't have the same kind of loyalty/sympathy call it what ever you want to current affairs - like those being flown home in body bags from Afghanistan.
It's called getting things in perspective. A zebra crossing isn't FFS!

@waldo
i really dont think a throwaway subject about a zebra crossing should be mentioned alongside our war dead.

English Heritage (as an organisation) is there to protect our Heritage. A heritage that contributes massively to tourism (amongst other things). After all, a *lot* of people travel to this country to see our heritage. While they are here, not only will they spend money on travel, but they'll also need a place to stay (which can cost a lot), they'll need to eat/drink (more money) and they may want to buy gifts and other stuff while they are here. And yes, people probably do come over here specifically to walk across that crossing.
You speak as though the government is ignoring the plight of those sent into war to fight. The government isn't. They may not be doing enough, but, TBH, that is a subject for another thread, so isn't appropriate here.

If you have a problem with the above subject why not start your own thread about Afghanistan, as this subject has absolutely nothing to do with the Heritage Minister or English Heritage, this is to do with tourism nothing more and I doubt anyone will be touring Afghanistan in the near future.
Remember to check the top of the thread where it states this is in the Entertainment section not Current Affairs.
