UK government to receive proposal for 'Channel 6'.
UK national newspapers have revealed that a former key broadcasting executive is said to be in talks with the UK government’s advisory panel to launch Channel 6, an integrated national and local television channel.

Re: UK government to receive proposal for 'Channel 6'.
Why, there isn't enough content or advertising revenue for five channels to operate let alone six...

Re: UK government to receive proposal for 'Channel 6'.
Because Channel Five has shown there is such a need for another channel.......

But everyone has to go digital pretty soon anyway so everyone will have at least freeview. No one is only going to have access to 5 channels alone are they? how can there possibly be a need for a channel 6

Re: UK government to receive proposal for 'Channel 6'.
I would imagine a channel that is "supported" by Government would not be under the same financial pressures as a "non-supported" one which, in theory, would at least allow it to get established based on it's content rather than it's bank balance.
It would also put the channel under certain criteria such as showing a particular amount of various programme genre.
It's a non-starter in my book unless it was funded in a similar way to the BBC (i.e did not carry adverts).

I'd like to see the BBC's TV offerings reduced back to 2 channels... they're spreading the good stuff about too far with 5 channels!

If you've only got 4 channels Jim then you're still working off the soon to be switched off analogue system. You need a digital box (Freeview box) to get all the channels.

Yeah, you are right, I have a Sky box downstairs on the main tv and obviously do get channel 5 on that one.
Have a spare Freeview box that I used before I had Sky, it was for the wife mainly, I don't watch much tv, don't have the time.

Early days Channel 4 had it, early Channel 5 had it, so you can bet that if there's a Channel 6 the 'late night Movies 24 kind of stuff' will find it's way there too.

Channel 6 UPDATE: Jeremy Hunt unveils plan for new national television channel.
The culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, will today unveil plans for a new national television channel to help deliver his ambition for a network of local TV services.
Hunt will also investigate whether "must carry" obligations on BSkyB and Virgin Media are an "appropriate" measure to ensure the widest reach possible for the new channel.

Who said anything about BBC? it's got nothing to do with them it's called Channel 6 not BBC6 and there is no BBC5 anyway, same as Channel 5 has nothing to do with them, it's just someone wanting to launch a new channel

Guardian: Jeremy Hunt confirms major shift in local TV policy.
The culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, on Thursday confirmed a major policy shift in his plan for a new generation local TV services, all but scrapping the idea of a national network "spine" in favour of "more financially secure" individual stations.
