Re: Tony Wilson RIP
Even more reason for those of us in the Manchester area to pop down to Urbis for the Hacienda 25 exhibition.
Well worth a visit...

Re: [MERGED] Tony Wilson RIP
A man who probably has had more of an influence on UK music than almost any other. After all, as well as launching the "Madchester" music scene in the late 80s/early 90s (and giving UK dance a huge kick up the .... in the process), he was also resposible for giving the Sex Pistols their first showing on live TV.
He was also darned interesting to listen to when talking, and apparently wasn't impressed with the film about him.
A great man, and he'll be missed.

Re: [MERGED] Tony Wilson RIP
My heart really sank when I heard this on BBC news on Saturday morning. I was honestly almost in tears and I'm filling up again typing this now. It's a very sad day for music.
He truly was a legend, not only in Manchester but the whole world. Growing up in Manchester during the 80's and 90's, it's hard to describe the massive influence he had on me. I was lucky enough to meet him twice, and, all be it very briefly, talk to him about music and Manchester.
The good thing is he leaves a legacy that most people can only dream about. As an ex Hacienda clubber who still gets out there, I can honestly say I don't think we would have the scene we have today if it hadn't have been for him and Factory. Some of todays big name DJ's such as Sasha cut their teeth at the Hac and many more were inspired to take to the wheels of steel (me included) after hearing Dave Haslam, Jon Da Silva, Graham Pickering and co play.
The music scene we know today would also be completely different - look at the number of modern bands who name check the likes of New Order and Happy Mondays. There were just as many he didn't sign but gave a helping hand to - The Stone Roses and The Smiths (who he always regretted not signing to Factory) played some of their early gigs at the Hac and Madonna's first UK appearance was there too. Many other bands were inspired to form just by the "Manchester" scene - step forward Oasis for one.
I hope there is some kind of lasting tribute to the man, maybe some kind of an annual festival / event along the lines of those for John Peel. I for one will be going down the Urbis exhibition and hopefully some of the other Hacienda 25 events and remembering him the way he would want.
RIP Anthony "H" Wilson.

An annual festival would be good, there's also a suggestion that Whitworth Street West be renamed Anthony H. Wilson Street...

I heard about the street renaming.... hmmm, not sure about it. A bit too much like when they name a street after a local Councillor or a University building after Nelson Mandela. Politically correct? Yes. Lasting tribute? Probably not.

Re: [MERGED] Tony Wilson RIP
Christie's Hospital in Manchester have received donations, in response to his death.
I will always remember him on Granada Reports...
I was at the Castlefield Arena today and someone has put a big "Tony Wilson - RIP" there, written in strips of turf.

Re: [MERGED] Tony Wilson RIP
Wow. Freaked me a bit to see this thread 'resurrected' (thanks JS and IB).
I wasn't sure this event had made the front line media as much as I had hoped it would but hey.
I'll be there. Cheers for the bump, Cobby.
