Re: Doctor Who Season 4 (and xmas special)
I thought the Christmas special was a bit of letdown myself. I think the beeb must have thought having Kylie star would be enough to distract viewers from this poor (in comparison to others) episode of Dr Who

I can't get over the feeling it's a slight reworking of The Poseidon Adventure from 1972.

Remember, Catherine Tate is a shakespearean actress. Therefore, you would expect her to be good. She also describes herself as an actress rather than a comedienne.
I don't think we can say whether she will be good or not until she has been in a couple of stories.

Its a shame they killed Astrid, I thought she would have made a excellent assistant.

Sadly, while I think Kylie would be good, I suspect she'd be too expensive.

If you saw the DW confidential, it seemed at the end of it that she would have liked to have been.

Re: Doctor Who Season 4 (and xmas special)
The problem I see so far with CT is her character sounds very chavvy/am I bovvered. I've always thought that female Doctor Who assistants should have an element of class about them - and so far her character haqs fallen far short of that.

I don't think CT can act in any other way, all she seems to be able to do is the loud shouty Bovvered nonsense. I had the misfortune to catch her christmas special and it was totally terrible, not a laugh was uttered during the whole show all her characters are almost the same

Re: Doctor Who Season 4 (and xmas special)
Catherine Tate is indeed a classically trained actress, and though she is often asked to play "shouty" characters, she is capable of much more. She was in an ITV drama a year or two back playing a single mother and she was brilliant in that, not shouty at all, a very restrained and moving performance.
Unfortunately so far the Doctor Who production team seem to have asked her to play Donna rather like her shouty "Lauren" character, at least from Runaway vride and the bits of the trailers so far, which is a pity. But if it does turn out she's like that don't blame her....she *is* capable of much better.
I had heard that Donna would be toned down a bit for series four, I do hope so, though the trailer doesn't seem to suggest this.

Yup, the good looking, intelligent one which showed everyone just how dopey "medical student" Martha was (really, if she was my doctor I'd discharge myself in more ways than one than allow her to treat me!).

The trailer that follows the Christmas episode has to appeal to the millions of extra casual viewers as well as the fans - they're bound to show Tate's most Donna-esque scene because that's what most people will immediately connect with.
When she first appeared at the end of season 2 in her bridal dress she sounded very Donna but I don't think she was nearly that bad during the following Christmas special. If they have toned it down from there, she should be fine.
Let's not forget, none of us knew Billie Piper to be anything more than an irritating, squeaky teenie pop singer until she joined the show.
But I'd still like to add my vote to any 'Sally Sparrow for Companion' campaign that might ever get going ...

Re: Doctor Who Season 4 (and xmas special)
Also, within the storyline: The character was taken from her own wedding and put in danger, for all she knew, by the man who saved her. Anyone would be feeling a whole load of emotions, and would probably act totally out of character as a result.
