btw, I am many things, but PC isn't one of them - I just like to make sure that I try and think about the effects of my words and actions on others (no matter what their race, sexuality, creed, orientation, hair colour, nationality, number of heads) - if that is being "PC", then I plead guilty, m'lud.

So you can accept by being ignorant you can falsly label someone a racist regardless. Everyone has their own limits in their minds to what constitutes racism. Now that a sense of humour doesn't cut it, nor ignorance, no one can make a mistake (Emily) without a big todo which equals vilification without any kind of defence.
I read that Emily used a racially offensive word 'to' Charley without any undertones of racism other than trying to be 'cool, hip or trendy' to Charley. And even Charley wasn't offended by it. So now it's punishable my extreme vilification because you get it 'wrong' without the hatred meaning or derogatory emphasis on a 'word' which can have multiple meaning. I hope the media sees sense and see the differences here compared to the Shetty episode. So what kind of message is 'making a point' or zero tolerance giving out at the same time.
It's basically coming to a point where if someone accuses someone of being racist, they themselves are also being racist for bringing it up or thinking that way in the first place. So easily to get it wrong though isn't it.
So much for 'reality' TV.

Your assumption is incorrect ( if you are referring to me). Ignorance is not an excuse, merely a reason.
btw, I agree with you, and think that C4 swung the pendulum to the other extreme - my only concern is that the red-tops will scream "PC brigade", and roll out all the false stories re banning chrismukka, etc.

No it wasn't directly pointed at you but you know how easily it is to point fingers and be wrong at the same time. I don't think any one knows the boundries of what safe is and where the blur starts.
Can I say I'm proud to be white/British etc, would that offend blacks/other race and religions, and am I allowed to say blacks and in being descriptive. This is where people can fall into a trap simply without realising and without an ounze of malice nor any other disrespectful meanings.
The trouble is, the label 'Racist' is a harsh one, and it doesn't have a level of any kind, you're either a racist or not a racist, if I'm wrong and the word 'Black' in the context is out of order (by someone else's standard apparently) then does that mean I've suddenly become racist and do I deserve all the vilification that goes with it.
It's so all blown out of proportion mostly by those worried of getting anything wrong and for trying to adhere to the rules too strictly.

Re: Big Brother
I think it was debateable whether the term used was appropriate for an instant eviction so they should have put it to a vote with the other community members (the house mates). That would have been fairer. Rather than trial by media it'd be trial by the people who decide whether or not she is appropriate to keep in with them.

That's right, the incident wasn't shown 'live' either. Sounds like an easy sacrifice to me.

Re: Big Brother
it's about stats - they want to know if black people (for example) who report a crime get treated equally to another ethnic origin.

Ironic, being told to go back on the topic of big brother by big brother. lol.
I've lost any interest in the whole thing now because the whole point of Big Brother was to observe in a reality type of enviroment. The sound drop outs, the turned away cameras when anything decent (if that's possible) happens makes it pointless as it's just way too censored and edited to make anything possible if they want.

Re: Big Brother
Emily clearly wasn't being racist (whether she is racist is something only those close to her will know for certain) however her choice of words was unfortunate given BB's recent PR.
The situation now is how the housemates will respond to the enorcement of rules in that way. I believe her comment came out without her even thinking about what she said so if I was in there I'm sure I'd be on edge, being careful what I was saying.
I'm not sure this is going to turn out to be the best BB at all.

Re: Big Brother
I can't believe what I've just heard. Emily called Charly a 'nigger', clearly in a context which was not meant as racist, then Charly said "I'm a nigger" and nothing is said about it.

I think Charley made a bit of a mountain out of a molehill about it with all the "I'm shocked" comments. Emily has been dim and has paid the price for her lack of intelligence.
