Sweetie Shops
When I was a lad, people in shops had names generally those written above the door.
With thrupence to spend (1.5p) Mr MacGee would wait calmly until I decided. My cash would buy 12 Fruit Salads or Black Jacks or a packet of Golden Wonder crisps
(two flavours only) or The Beano.
Asda is just not the same.

Re: Sweetie Shops
Maybe not but sweeties are not the same either! - I only know of one "true" (doesn't sell papers, lottery tickets, fags, beer, or rent videos!) sweet shop round where I live and thats 5 miles away.

Re: Sweetie Shops
What about J. Sainsburys or Wm Morrisons? Do they sound better?

Re: Sweetie Shops
Your purchase came in a white paper cone bag , the top twisted, so you could carry your sweeties home.
This method prevented you have to share with some looser who did not have thrupence.

Re: Sweetie Shops
Eeeee, them were the days...
Nipping down to "Joneses corner" & spending Sixpence... (I once spent a thruppence too).
Although my favorite was a coconut tobacco stuff that came in a red wax packet with a picture of a ship on (cannot remember its name), never seen it since..
Then there was "Tremains" opposite it, a bit too expensive for me though.
Eeeee, when I was a lad....
