Mel Gibson--Scottish hero?
So I met two Scottish gentlemen on the train yesterday. They're touring Toronto and area. We started talking, and we drifted to towards the English.
They're telling me that Mel Gibson is like a hero in Scotland. First he makes Braveheart, and kicks some English ass, then he makes the Patriot, and kicks some more English ass.
Any truth in this hero business?

No, not really although Braveheart did get the old patriotic blood flowing. I think they may have been pulling your leg a wee bit although there are quite a few Scots who like nothing more than seeing anything English getting a pasting from the Scots, don't mind it myself if truth be told. It's the usual story when a famous actor portrays a National Hero, factual or not, they say they have always loved the country, have traced a distant relative to that country and then don the National Dress (no jokes please). Some people are taken in by this and don't realise it is generally done to promote the film.

Re: Mel Gibson--Scottish hero?
definately not trying to wind you up......scottish hero's are few and far between and thats why they latch on to film stars who portray them as hero's , i mean look at their footy and rugby teams.....

"Ignoring the comment (albeit truthful!) about our wonderful footy and rugby teams"hehe.
I wouldnt say Mel Gibson is a hero just a lot of people loved the movie and the ethos of it.

And others nearly had attacks of apoplexy because of the liberties it took with history!
