Spinoff - Degree selections
OK, so after umming and ahhing for far too long at the beginning of this academic year, then having a whole heap of *****e to deal with, I left it too late to apply to uni via UCAS.
Or so I thought...
UCAS extra has just been launched for this year (A kind of second chance as I understand it for those with no offers to apply for more courses), and a few of the courses I want to do (primary teaching, am I mad!?) are available through UCAS extra.
Now, using my deformed logic, if these courses are available through UCAS Extra, I'm assuming there are places available. I'm not eligible to use UCAS Extra (never submitted a form this time) but is it too late to apply through the "normal" UCAS procedure?
Anyone submitted a UCAS form 2 months after the closing deadline & it been accepted? Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get into primary teaching if I'm not on a degree course this year? (There is a pay-as-you-train option for undergrads, but you have to be 23 I believe, and I'll still be 22 at the start of the academic year )
Opinions and miracle cures much appreciated!
Carly

Re: Spinoff - Degree selections
Gosh, nearly three years ago that I applied (for the second time ). I'm sure that there is a very final deadline in June, that's when I applied. As far as I remember, there were two deadlines, the fist was sometime in the new year, where if you applied by this deadline your application was guaranteed to be considered by the universities you applied to.. Applications would then still be accepted until the end of the second deadline, but the universities you applied to didn't have to even look at the forms.

I wonder if UCAS would count this forum as an online debate society?

carly if you are really really interested in doing primary teaching, although i think that you are too late to get onto a course now... because they have mainly started by now, my advice would be to do shed loads of work experience.... apply to all your local primary schools to help as a classroom assistant, explain that you want to do a uni course next year....
from what i remember if you have had experience then uni's are more likely to except you first time.
my friend has just gone back to do a primary school course..... and last year she did a lot of work experience for it and it really favoured her with her applications.
if you are desprate to do the uni course this year, my only advice would be to call the admissions office of any unis you are considering.... it really is a long shot because you have left it rather late.
instead of looking at it negatively, think about the fact that you are basically doing a gap year and use the experience to your advantage.
a further thought: have you ever considered doing some travelling or contacting an organisation which allows you to teach english etc abroad.... a friend of mine did that in their gap year and found it really rewarding

Re: Spinoff - Degree selections
Hey, hang on - I started this thread in March; thanks for the advice, but I don't need any now!
Good luck to anyone filling in UCAS forms - they're not that scary, honestly - the personal statement can be a bit harsh, but I managed to write mine - if I can do it, anyone could

lol, sorry for the confusion. But this is the time where this years ucas applicants will be making the application form (online in many cases), so I thought one should be brought to the front for discussion.

It's bad but apparently not as bad as the Jobseekers form.

Re: Spinoff - Degree selections
Carly have a look at www.open.ac.uk they run both undergrad courses and a flexible PGCE, I'm sure they even do a BEd. May be worth a read as their courses don't start again until February

Aint that the truth Have you seen the "all work test"? Huge form you have to fill in when disabled/sick in order to receive (and keep receiving) Incapacity Benefit. Loads of questions along the lines of "Can you pick up a coin"
If you're at college, you should be given help and support in the UCAS application process. Feel free to contact Uni's and ask questions. If I remember rightly, the personal statement is about showing you're a well-rounded person who's keen to learn the subject you're applying for.
