Dates to casually drop into the conversation
1 January is the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ. On second thoughts, dropping this in is more likely to earn you strange looks.
I had a calendar once that insisted on giving the birthdays of extremely obscure Americans.

17th of jan -- international hot and spicy food day
22nd jan -- chinese monkey year (year 4641) starts
23rd jan -- national pie day
31st jan -- it's the brookfield ice harvest in vermont... dont u wish you were there? 
october 13 -- dave's birthday. also bill odenkirk's, whoever the hell he is.

17 Jan and 23 Jan raises the interesting question of who dreams up these sorts of days. I think that a lot of them come from various trade associations who simply announce them in a few press releases and try to make them sound as if they've been celebrated since time immemorial.
