Just been to Oslo!
Just went over for the weekend to do a bit of sightseeing (thanks to Ryanair for the seriously cheap flight), but was astounded by the price of food and drink.
Its unreal, we think we have it bad over here but i kid you not a LOCAL beer, not a Carlsberg etc, cost around 56 Krona on average... The exchange rate is about 12 krona to the pound, a name beer is into the 60's.
Yup, thats about 5 quid a beer and thats for 0.4L not even a pint!
Food was really expensive too, your looking at about 25 quid for a main and expect to pay around 26 quid for an average bottle of wine.
I took a piccy of the price list for an average bar which i will post at some point, but man its really pricey out there.
Had a great time though, the funniest thing was The Scotsman "theme" bar in the centre which had a lifesized plastic david beckham look-a-like out the front in full football kit advertising the food.

Isn't Norway still outside the EU? Did you have to get a visa?

Re: Just been to Oslo!
Is it still that expensive?
I did a couple of weeks in the early 90's out there, implementing logistics software, and we found the best way to make friends was to take a couple of bottles of Scotch out with you - makes you v. popular.
Glad you had a good time.

Re: Just been to Oslo!
Sounds a bit like Stockholm. Last year we had a meal out there to celebrate the end of a week-long skiing trip. It cost us something like £60 each. Mrs A had one glass of wine with her meal - IIRC that was £9 alone!

Re: Just been to Oslo!
I've heard quite a few people saying Norway is very expensive for everything.
Definately not the place to go to if you are looking to get some cheap things to bring back to the UK.
Woul'dnt mind going there for sight seeing though. Is there much to do in the city ?

I would say i had a really good time, there are loads of museums and tours to go on and there was lots to keep us occupied over the weekend, we werent stuck for things to do put it that way.
Depends what floats your boat really - but as i've mentioned it does cost.
If i was to recommend a city break though i cant fault Prague - beautiful city, great food, cheap as chips and loads to see.

Re: Just been to Oslo!
I've been there before but it was about ten years ago now.
Currently going through Tripadvisor.co.uk and reviewing hotels.
I love travelling. We are only going for a 3 day weekend but it's a break from work and also my birthday so hoping it to be good.
I'm off in November.

Re: Just been to Oslo!
I spent a lot of time in Norway in the early nineties in the Army. We used to stay near a town called Voss. The pubs there used to charge about £4.20 a pint of beer. Its weird because I then went to Oslo for a couple of days expecting to pay even more but found it to be about £2.20 a pint. I think we were getting stitched up in Voss! They new that British squaddies would be there for a few months every winter and took advantage of it!
A nice country though and generally nice people. Probably the worst beer I have tasted though. Even Bosnian beer tasted better!
