Jamie Olivers views on packed lunches
So Jamie Oliver is all over the news telling parents to sort it out- packed lunches are full of Cr*p , His new show starts on monday called return to school dinners and he is running around in a fat suit ( i thought he had put on weight)
His comments annoyed me- is there really an issue with redbull and crisps in packed lunches? then I read a story about mums in sheffield doing a pie and chips run for thier kids and passing it over the school gates- www.sheffieldtoday.net
After reading this I have changed my mind and will watch the programme and support him.

What do you mean by "an issue with redbull and crisps"?

Re: Jamie Olivers views on packed lunches
It was in most of the national papers, and the prime time news programmes.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/food/Story/0,,1867491,00.html
Jamie Oliver said "I have seen kids of the ages of four or five, the same age as mine, open their lunchbox and inside is a cold, half-eaten McDonald's, multiple packets of crisps and a can of Red Bull. We laugh and then want to cry."

No wonder teachers cant control the kids if they are drinking red bull. might as well give them a expresso in the morning before they go to school..

Re: Jamie Olivers views on packed lunches
Quite! I back Mr Oliver to the hilt on this one as I have quite literally seen a child before lunch quite sensiblly working and then 20 minutes later full of crisps, chocolate and a cola practically having to be dragged down from the ceiling.
I'm more than happy to kick all the junk food out of school and so should ALL parents. It may be cheap costwise but at the end of the day it is very expensive from a health point and most importantly from an educational position.Children whom have attention deficit disorders do not need a dose of caffiene,a multitude of food additives, too many refined carbs and then ritilin on top. They need a good well organised lifestyle (regular bedtimes),good nutrition and as little chemical stimulus as possible.Maybe we don't need to drug our children to get them working in the classroom we merely need to feed them better.
Frankly I can recall that when school dinners were provided we didn't have as many 'syndrome' children as we have now...maybe overcooked cabbage was actually quite good for you?

Still very much the same today. In fact, even Primary school food is getting worse.

Re: Jamie Olivers views on packed lunches
I used to have a lunchbox (actually went through several) that came with it's own flask, you know the ones, screw top and flip spout.
In that you can fit the flask of juice (or soup in the winter), a sandwich, an piece of fruit, and a small chocolate bar as a treat.
Costs next to nothing, only time to do the sandwiches.

i definately agree with you there rammy.
My nephew's school will not allow them to have fizzy drinks at lunchtime which i think is a good idea. and we always make sure that he has a sandwich, and a piece of fruit, as well as a packet of crisps.
However, the school do not always make sure that the kids eat all the lunch they are given (this is primary school) and i think that they should make sure they eat everything they are given.
(hope that all makes sense, dosed up on beechams)

Re: Jamie Olivers views on packed lunches
The problem is one of guilt. The parent's know they're bad parents and deep down feel guilty, but can't/won't do anything about it. So they take it out on those who make them feel worse - such as Mr Oliver. Or those who increase the responsibilities that they then feel guilty about not fulfilling, such as buttering a slice of bread and putting a bit of meat in. It's actually not that hard to make a decent sandwich.
