Here's an interesting question.

If overnight things changed so that if someone caused intentional physical pain on someone else they felt that pain themselves too, what effect would it have on society?

We would live in a society in which pain was for the most part self inflicted, and psychological. There would be less pain inflicted by one on another, but each individual would live in permanent fear and paranoia of causing pain on someone else not because of a desire for the well being of their fellow man, but in order to preserve their own skin.

This idea was implemented in a Red Dwarf episode. IIRC they had a zone where it was physically impossible to commit a crime as you would feel the results yourself. The results were quite funny. Lister tried setting fire to a blanket and ended up with a burning jacket.

Well, the market for better local and general anaesthetics would pick up; and surgeons could let the gas-man do the first incision - that would make sure he/she had got the mix right!
