Fungus trouble
Sigh. My latest plant isn't too happy. Leaves are yellowing. Thinking it was light that it needed, I moved it to the bathroom, where there's more light. A few days ago, I thought the compost had a strange smell. This evening I spotted a toadstool growing out the pot I'm thinking that the whole lot will have to go in the bin £30 down the drain, if you include the pot and glass beads I've put on top of the compost. I'm not impressed. Is there anything I can kill the fungus with?

Re: Fungus trouble
Is the "toadstool" a mushroom? If so, it's probably nothing to worrry about. Old mushroom compost gets recycled into normal plant compost. In fact, even if it's not a mushroom it's probably OK. Fungi live on dead stuff, not your plant.
What sort of plant is it? My guess is the problem is overwatering and/or bad drainage.

and some fungi do help plants they grow with - the 'mushroom' is just a fruit, the real thing lives in the soil...
- you may have to let your plant be a little drier, as suggested, though, John,

Re: Fungus trouble
The instructions said it need plenty of water and no direct sun. Load of ******** - it loves the sun. Humf. I've found another 3 toadstools. I'm going to let it dry out, as suggested. Failing that, it's off in the bin. I kill everything
Oh and the toadstool is not a mushroom. I wouldn't mind mushrooms - nice in a stir fry. It's a toadstool - not one I recognise. Small white cap with a sort of brown dusting.
[edit] And yes - it doesn't live on my plant. But it's like inviting your mate to dinner and him turning up with his gran. Who smells of wee. And the dentures don't fit too well. She may be harmless but do you really want her sat on your sofa?

toadstool/mushroom are synonymous, it is like dogs, all poodles are dogs, but not all dogs are poodles

Sooooooo fussy. They're all fungi but the word "mushroom" is used to refer to those varieties that are edible, though really the word "mushroom" is any fungus with a stalk and cap, including the nasty ones.

Re: Fungus trouble
Oh yeah - nasty. Or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_agaric which I have seen and is a beautiful thing. It looks really odd - all that brown and suddenly something that is vivid red. I know there are some that interact with alcohol in the stomach and cause vomiting.
