Bird scarers - plastic owls?

I'm a bit short of sleep as, for the past week a fat pigeon has been sitting on nextdoor's roof right outside our bedroom window. From about 4am every morning there's a repeated woo-ooh wooh-ooh

The neighbour has moaned about it too, and I suggested that spiky strip stuff you can get. That would involve climbing the roof though (and it's high and steep). Then there's always the risk the flying rat will then just sit on our roof instead.

I was looking at getting a plastic owl and mounting it high in the fence post between our two houses. Anyone know if they work, or know of any better alternatives? I don't have an air rifle - if I had then I'd have been tempted, despite being a big animal fan.

Re: Bird scarers - plastic owls?

Found this - a great read :

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...010069,00.html

JEANNETTE DICKS does not like pigeons — especially the homing variety that live next door. She has to duck when she is in her garden as they fly by, and they poop on her washing.

So she evolved a strategy to see them off: she planted a pole in her garden and topped it with an ornamental, but cred- ible, model of an eagle owl. Eagle owls eat pigeons, among other things from roe deer fawns to snakes. NI_MPU('middle');For her inventive, but seemingly harmless course of action, Mrs Dicks, a 69-year-old grandmother, has now learnt that an ASBO could be flying her way.

The owl will be ordered today!

We have two, and I had wondered about providing a ramp onto the neighbour's roof. The only problem is that our two pampered brats are fast asleep at this hour of the day, dreaming about what brand of posh food they're gonna get for brekkie.

mmmmm - if they are that pampered, if you provide a ramp, you might find them in the garden next morning, wearing splints.

Re: Bird scarers - plastic owls?

Think yourself lucky mate - i've got a bar steward Magpie in the back garden at the moment that sounds like a football rattle every time it starts up in the morning.

A coo-cooo of a Pigeon sounds to me like sweeet sweeet honey by comparision.

Anyone know if i can blast its fethery hide to kingdom come legaly?

I don't think you can, Europe had a problem with the bigger birds being hunted, so I think they banned it and it includes us, which is a shame because now all you see are crows and magpies.

I think that is why it's banned in Europe, where as we shoot them purely for pest control, now thats illegal the bloody things are everywhere

Re: Bird scarers - plastic owls?

You can shoot pigeons, but not magpies.

1 for sorrow (yours).

Buying a plastic owl tomorrow. Have read mixed reports on whether they work or not.

Re: Bird scarers - plastic owls?

Pigeons neither coo or woo. Poo, yes - lots of it - but not coo or woo. That would be a dove. I like the sound. Pigeons make a sort of rippling cough or chuckle, which I don't mind neither.
