Peugeot 406

Got a whining noise coming from underneath the dashboard when I turn the key, it's whining all the time, it's starting to get on my nerves now, the noise is coming from underneath the glove box. Any ideas chaps.

I'm guessing the heater fan?

or more nastier is the starter motor not disengaging

Re: Peaugeot 406

Could be a number of things.
Could be the wine of the fuel pump.
Or as scrubbs says heater/aircon.

turn the key and open the bonnet and see if you can still hear the wine.

Re: Peugeot 406

I've found out what it is, I've taken the aforementioned motor out, I located the noise so I took the motor out, it's a big unit with a cone shaped fan located on the top, it's located beneath the glove box, there is a whining coming from the motor, I gave it a tap plus a spray of WD40 but it's still whining.

My 406 fan is also noisy, it will not blow air down towards my feet either. I think someone said the flap is not via a wire but with a solenoid.

Pug electrics are crap, but I guess you get what you pay for!

See if you can get me a glove box catch when you are there

The local dealer had three attempts at ordering me a new catch, and then turned around claiming you cant get them cos they never break. I have however spoken to another owner who had similar problems, and an ex-work collegue who used to work for a main dealer said the same.

I would never buy another pug, good diesel engine, comfy ride but cheap flimsy build and crap electrics. Oh not to mention suspension bushes that only last a couple of years.

To improve the airflow,
Change the Pollen filter mate! They get clogged up with hair and dust over a period of time and they cost about £12.00 to replace if i remember correctly.
Regarding the electrics on a 406, pull your multiplugs apart ad spray some wd40 on them or grease them up as sometime`s you get dry connections between the different halves.
I know. I own a 406!¬

My problem is not the pollen filter, (previous owner had replaced it in an attempt to cure the prob) its something to do with the flap that directs air to the footwells. There is plenty of air out of the dash vents and the windscreen vents, but nothing in the footwells.

I thought it would be simply controlled by a bowden cable, but I have been told it has servo valves operating the flaps.

Could be a case of changing the Heater control panel then Mate.!
If the PCB has a fault in it it could be operating the motors all of the time. Sounds expensive though so go to a Breakers Yard and try and get one.

No mate...the noise is there as soon as you turn the ignition key and it doesn't go off until you take the key out.

Which is why my 406 Coupe was so much more, aside for brakes and exhaust never had a single problem with it, electrics or otherwise.
