The best way to clean a wood floor is not the fastest but will result in a long-lasting shine. After vacuuming the floor, apply a liquid wood-floor cleaner with a dry wax applicator on a small area at a time. Let it soak for a few minutes, and wipe up the excess. When the floor is dry, buff with a floor polisher. Caution: This is a combustible mixture; use only in a well-ventilated area.
Soo many links, I think I'll stop and let someone who knows answer...good luck

Would have thought wax would do the trick Wax on. Wax off.

I could have sworn his floor was vanishing just then.
Don't they make special cleaning stuff for this sort of thing?

The stuff we use at work is white in colour and smells like ammonia. You just mop it on, wait for it to dry and its instant shine. The smell goes when dry.
Liquid floor polish/seal you are looking for, unfortunately it costs about £20 fo 5 litres but it should last ages. One tip: do not walk on it until it is absolutely dry about 45 mins. if you do any mark will be embedded into the shine. The only way to get this stuff off is to scrub it off. Its good stuff.

I've just put this stuff on my new oak floor in me kitchen. It's called Rustins Clear Plastic Floor Coating. It blooming well stinks - you're talking burning nostrils and stinging eyes for a few hours after putting it on. Definitely use a decent mask with it (even though the instructions make no mention). And kick the kids and cats out for the day.
http://www.rustins.co.uk/product.htm?chgprod=PCF
Can be walked on in two hours. Give it at least a week or two to fully harden.
I've also used the non-floor version on the worktops. Looks amazing. With the worktops, you blather it on, then sand it flat then polish it with burnishing cream. The only problem is that it's so perfect it doesn't look like real wood.
The only problem with this stuff is that it's fine for new wood, but it's a bit fussy about anything that's already there. You might have to power sand first. Well worth it though.

Re: Wooden Flooring - Varnished - Looks dull any suggestions?
We have no carpets in our house. All the wooden floors are stripped bear and then varnished or waxed. We started using varnish (Sadolin Holdex) but, since it's just a surface coat, it doesn't last long and quickly looks grubby. Lately, we've been using wax with better results but it still doesn't last for ever. Finally, we've settled on stuff called Danish Oil which soaks in but leaves a good surface. Wet feet will leave permanent marks in ordinary floor wax.
But, you're not gonna get any Danish Oil in without stripping off the varnish first. If you don't have the time for this then I'd suggest you just clean the floor and varnish it again.

Have a good range of treatments available by mail order (including Danish oil). I have a similar problem with quarry tiling and they have just the stuff.

I already have some danish oil for my worktops and that is good stuff, but i would need to remove the varnish first to get that on.
I'll have a good look through that site - thanks everyone!

Re: Wooden Flooring - Varnished - Looks dull any suggestions?
Hi there,
The best and the right way to do it is to hire a buffing machine and buff the floor with a 100 grid sanding screen(light buffing). Then get a good quality varnish(Bona) in silkmatt or gloss finish i you want to be realy shiny.Aplly then a realy thick coat of varnish and your floor is ready. If you requied more information or tips don't hesitate to contact me.
