Wire wool it to key it and use Diamond matt varnish from your nearest Dulux centre
well the floor is prob knackard now lol

Thats the one 
When we wanted to bring our wood floors up nicely last year we used a rotary cleaning machine (like you see them using at airports etc.) with what looked like a big round green brillo pad under it to remove the old varnish and clean the ground in dirt off. Then, once dry, we applied a liquid varnish (using a spray bottle) and used a mop to evenly distribute it. Two or three coats of that resulted in a lovely gloss effect

I've moved house since then, somebody else's problem now!
Anyone know where i can get Lime mortar for sandstone repointing?
