Done my neck in
I think it's my neck Woke up Monday with a bit of a stiff neck - nothing major. Slowly getting worse - was in agony this morning. Left-hand side of my neck at the bottom and it radiates along my shoulder. Certain arm and neck movements are painful Doped up on Ibuprofen. See the Doc Friday morning. I need my own personal Rammy

Re: Done my neck in
Mine does that quite often. Massage it or rub some Deep Heat in.

Re: Done my neck in
Ravages of old age Will see how long the doc gives me in the morning. Wish I could say that I was, say, on the North face of the Eiger when a piton came loose, but no - I woke up with it. Story of my life.

Re: Done my neck in
Keep Deep Heat treating it and keep taking Ibruprofen. If you can move it do so as much as possible (gently though). I used to get this quite regularly until a Doctor told me to keep moving my neck as much as possible even through the pain. Now whenever I get a twinge I gently move my neck and shoulders as much as possible and so it doesn't get any worse.
Good luck with the Doctor and wait for his diagnosis.

Re: Done my neck in
If your neck muscles are aching badly you could try this: OK, it's not good image, but I got a hand towel, laid an elastic bandage along it, folded the towel lengthways twice and used the bandage to tie it around my neck - it supported my head and gave my poor aching neck muscles a rest. A bit of an improvised surgical neck support. Next day - fine! I'm not sure that a medic would approve though...

Hmmm. If it all went wrong though - the headlines: "...found in bizarre auto-strangulation accident"
Ta for the support comments. Not dying that bothers me - it's aging. Really don't fancy it.

Re: Done my neck in
If you have woken up with a stiff neck and can't recall injuring it then you probably have sprained a muscle. Your GP will be able to provide you with pain killers and anti-inflammatories but unless you have other symptoms like tingling down the arm etc then not much more help. The best results I see from this type of thing are from a Chiropractor or Osteopath.

I agree.......but I would, wouldn't I?
It doesn't sound like anything serious atm but it can become very painful if you are unlucky. I could probably 'fix' this quite easily with some manipulation and massage. If you don't want the expense of a chiro or osteo then the gp is your next best stop but all they can offer is painkillers and anti-inflamms. Don't take non-steroidal anti inflammatories for longer than about 4-5 days because they have been shown to damage joint cartilage if used for much longer than that (not to mention the possible gastro-intestinal side effects). You might find you get relief from applying an ice pack to the base of your neck for about 5 mins every hour and trying to get as much pain free movement into the area.
No tingling in your fingers?

Re: Done my neck in
I had the same symptoms about 6 months ago after sleeping in a cramped caravan bed. It came back on and off for weeks. It felt bloody awful.
