Anyone been to Iceland?
I fancy going to Iceland on holiday, so looking for advice/ recommendations from people who have been.
I've looked at the Iceland tourism website but there are a few questions that i still have unanswered...
Is it best to book flights and then book a hotel locally, or book a package? Would a hotel or cottage/ private accomodation be best?
Is August/ September a good time of year to go?
Anywhere in particular that is good to see?
How expensive are things (drinks, meals out, day to day essentials etc etc)?
Any comments appreciated

They're doing interesting things with geothermal energy.

I quite like the idea of taking a dip at midnight under the stars.

Would love to go to Iceland and have a dip in their natural lagoons. From what I've heard before it's quite expensive up there, though.

You need to plan your holidays to fit the seasons. I visited China last October and temperatures ranged from 5 (but sunny so quite pleasant) in the North, to 20 in the south. I've been to Thailand many times. No-one in their right mind would go in summer (or the rainy season). Oct-March is Thailand season.
I've never been to Iceland. Sounds interesting though

Re: Anyone been to Iceland?
hot weather doesn't bother me but i just fancied somewhere cold... and i've wanted to go to Iceland for ages. Ann will soon have her British passport sorted so going somewhere together that is not Thailand will be a viable option
I went to Thailand in July and China in Augusst, next trip to Thailand is December, then one for April, which is hot hot hot! but Songkran so lots of fun!

If you haven't done so already: One of best things you can do in the region imo is to head off to Siem Reap (you can fly there from BKK) and spend 4/5 days visiting Angkor. I've seen a few sights in the region, and Ayuthaya, Sukothai, and even Pagan come nowhere near Angkor...

Re: Anyone been to Iceland?
I've been to BKK, spent a day in Pattaya (which i hated), also been to Chon Buri, Koh Laad, Phitsanulok and Uttaradit.
In december i'll spend most of the time in Uttaradit but hopefully find time to go upto Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai as well. In April next year Koh Samui and Koh Panang hopefully
Anyway... this thread was supposed to be about Iceland

Re: Anyone been to Iceland?
As a geologist I get to talk to quite a few people who've been - and the point thats put across most strongly is that the beer is about £15 a pint.
Edit - just had a look on google, and it seems to be more like a fiver a pint, I think possibly there was a lot of exaggeration involved when I was told?
