Re: Epi Lasek
Good luck Jamie with your laser eye treatment, I might be looking into this in the next few years so if you could share your experiences with us then I would be grateful.
And to CableForum!

Re: Epi Lasek
afaik Lasek is still classed as experimental because it hasn't been around long enough for the medics to assess it's long term effectiveness. There are some reported side effects such as night blindness due to a halo effect in some cases.
Having said that, one of my cousins had it done about 3 years ago and she is thrilled with the results.
Good luck!

Re: Epi Lasek
I've done a quick medline search on lasek and wavefront and this about summs it up:
Quote:
Curr Opin Ophthalmol. 2004 Aug;15(4):333-41.
Update on laser subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK).
Yee RW, Yee SB.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study reviews current concepts in laser subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK), variations in LASEK techniques, the role of pharmacology in LASEK, and optimizing outcomes in LASEK. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies continue to support the use of LASEK over that of LASIK in the correction of refractive error. In addition, the advent of pharmacological/biologic intervention, improved algorithms, and wavefront technology have expanded the armamentarium available to ophthalmologists in the maximization of LASEK outcomes. SUMMARY: LASEK offers an excellent profile in terms of both final outcome (uncorrected visual acuity) and safety (best corrected visual acuity). Untoward effects of LASEK are readily prevented/treated with a variety of agents. Postoperative pain can be ameliorated using topical and oral analgesia. Infection can be most effectively addressed with the fourth generation of fluoroquinolones. Haze may be treated or prevented using numerous remedies namely autologous serum, steroids, ascorbic acid, mitomycin-c, and NSAIDS. Wavefront combined with LASEK rather than with LASIK may offer the best refractive outcome.

In other words, you are less likely to get problems with lasek if they use wavefront.....

Re: Epi Lasek
It's been 11 months since I had mine done - absoloutely fantastic. I has Lasik rather than Lasek, so they sliced the top part of my cornea off rather than disolved it with alcohol!!
Mine was pain free during and after op. Not even any discomfort really. With Lasek, it's apparently a little more uncomfortable and takes longer to recover and get your full sight. It can take several weeks whereas with Lasik, my sight was better that 20/20 vision the next day - quite a bit better.
Wavefront helps with the halows/starbursts you can get at night if you have large pupils. My pupils are very small so I did not have wavefront. I have never had any problems at night. Those with large pupils are more prone to the starbursts (even before the op.) so it may be worth the extra few pounds having the wavefront added.
Everyone feels nervous before they have it done, it's natural, it is your eyes after all. To be honest i was petrified, but found it to be an awful lot easier than going to the dentist!!
