Unhappy [Merged]Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51-L

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident.

I remember coming home from school and watch John Craven's Newsround program break the story.

I was (and still am) an avid follower of space exploration and I remember watching it unfold before my eyes.

Sad sad day for the Shuttle programme.

And the 1st of February see's the 3rd anniversary of the loss of Columbia - another sad day.

(And not forgetting the Apollo 1 fire) - January 27, 1967

What are your memories of seeing Challenger explode?

For more info (and for those that have it) it's 'Dangerous space day' on Discovery science. Which covers a lot of this...

Re: Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51-L

Saw it on telly, actually saw both shuttle tragedies as they happened live on telly An avoidable loss both times in my opinion but hopefully something which many lessons were learned from.
My memory of it was when the boosters continued to fly their arcs after the vehicle was destroyed and left their trails in the sky.

I can't remember which program I was watching, when I first saw it, but I can remember sitting there in stunned disbelief for quite a while - it didn't sink in straight away that the whole thing had just been wiped out, in a few seconds.

I think Challenger had more effect on me than Columbia, as it was the first major accident involving a shuttle.

Thoughts are with the families of the astronauts who died, and with those that continue to push forward our knowledge, despite the setbacks...

Yes - I think every channel broke regular programmes to bring the news...and then a rushed programme on BBC2 later in the evening with Patrick Moore.

BTW - Read somewhere this moring that Lockheed (who make the External Tanks) have said they will only build 16 more tanks...so that's only 18 more (2 tanks ready to fly) for the shuttle programme.

Yeah - I was also at home on the day Columbia was destroyed. I head a breaking news story on BBC1 when switched to Sky News who also had it - and watched as Columbia streeked across the early morning Texas skies...unbelieveable...

Challenger 20 years on

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Challenger Disaster

http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0...499361,00.html

I remember that day like it was yesterday. I came home from work about 5pm and watched the news coverage till I went to bed about 12AM

In 1991 I went to the opening of the Space Memorial at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida

Re: Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51-L

I remember watching it on newsround.

What really stuck in my head is they played Europes Final countdown........or did I just imagine that?

It will be interesting to see what NASA does next, will future space travel be unmanned?????
