Class discrimination

There has been a lot about racism, Black, White, indian, etc. This thread is NOT about that, but the other type.

What other type is there some of you may be thinking about.

Well its cultural / class racism.

What I mean in some countries (india it think, but may be another) when you are born into a class, you stay in that class you cannot marry above or below that class, the poorest may only be able to afford basic clothing (Glorifed sack cloth), if they came into money that means that they could afford better, the 'class' means they still have to wear the same basic stuff. Equally a filthy rich man could see the most beiutul he has ever seen, but because she is in a lower class, he can't marry her.

In my personal case, my Mum, and her sister & brother were born in a small village, which had about 20 houses, her family were classed as outsiders, even though they'll lived there for over 7 years.

my mum told me that on one occasion they had a flower arranging competion for the 7 girls in the village. they tied for first place the five other girls, leaving out my mum and aunt.

another time they had a christmas party, for the whole village. they gave out fruit and small gifts for the kids, all except my mum, her sister & brother. only one bloke protested about them being left out.

has anybody here suffered from this type?

(NO comments about the usual racism please)

Re: Class discrimination

this is a "village" thing rather than class. Given that these days there are more "incomers" than locals in many villages things will/can change!

My family have lived in the area for nearly 100 years but we are still classed as incomers, however we have comitted ourselves to the area and as such are accepted.

Re: Class discrimination

It reminds me of...

"This is a local pub for local people"

The situation you described is nothing to do with class, but due to being an outsider. not something i have experienced myself, my family were welcomed to the village we moved to when i was little.

Re: Class discrimination

As for your example of Indian culture, that's not racism either. The caste system has been around for thousands of years, and is tied intinsically to Karma, the idea being that, through rebirth (or reincarnation) an individual may 'improve' themselves.

Other than the fact that I don't follow any religion, I don't really see what the problem with that is
