Re: Diabetes ...
My wife was diagmosed in 2000, but appears to have had it since 1992, consultant just changed the medication, she's on Insulin injections. I'm looking for someone - or a website that can explain the effects over time ??

Re: Diabetes ...
what are the different types? My grandad had it when he was old, but I don't know what 'type' geriatric diabetes is.

Type 1 is where your body can no longer produce Insulin. People with this need daily injections of Insulin (usually more than once a day).
Type 2 is where your body cannot produce enough Insulin or what they produce does not work properly. Few sufferers need injections.
You are not born with Type 1. Most Type 1 diabetics first get the condition as children but very few are less than 3 years old. You can be in your 20's or above before getting it. Type 2 generally affects the over 40's.
My daughter has had Type 1 since she was 12 months old.

I bow to your knowledge. My wife is type 2, but was diagnosed when she was 32. Was on injections within 3 months.

Re: Diabetes ...
I was diagnosed with type I only last week after a brief visit into hospital and a good stare at death's door.
I'm now on 4 injections a day and similary 4 times a day i've got to check my blood sugar levels.
The exact cause of type I is unkown but it is said to be somthing your born with and will develop at some point. Just when can be random. I'm 20 and had a medical on joining uni only a year ago and it was all clear.
Infact it seems as if it's built up over the last month or so summating last week where i had a complete lack of energy as i'd burnt off nearly all my fat and was passing all energy straight through.
The result i lost around about a stone in weight and now weigh in at just under 10 stone (~64kg) where i was nearer 11 stone 6 months ago.
The fact im 6"3 puts me rather alot under weight, boy did i like the order to put on weight :-D

She is quite rare then (and very unlucky) - rather like my daughter as she was only 12 months which again is rare.
