Your National Treasures
OK, thought I'd escape the restrictive confines of Current Affairs and drop into Lifestyle with a nice upbeat thread.
Who would you nominate as "national treasures"? Simple as that. Well not quite, let's steer clear of politicians unless you're nominating them for things other than politics we know where that road leads otherwise (and I introduced that caveat for a reason ). And they must be alive. So, in no particular order, I'll start the ball rolling. So name, and a brief line of explanation is all that's required.
Eric Sykes - comedy genius who won't let deafness and old age stop him getting the aughs
Boris Johnson - simply because he makes me cry with laughter on Have I Got News For You. The lovable buffoon.
Amir Khan & Dad - I know very little about boxing but by crikey even I can tell that boy is quick and powerful. And he seems grounded and immensely likeable and his dad the happiest and proudest in the world. NB. Amir's NT status might be a short lived one as he seemed to be showing early signs of Naseem syndrome on Saturday.
Marina Hyde - Guardian columnist of some intelligence and wit.
Guy Garvey - Lead singer of Elbow. Witty, articulate and with the voice of an angel.
There's plenty more I'm sure that don't immediately spring to mind but for now, over to you.........

Re: Your National Treasures
Jerry Sadowitz - Quite possibly the funniest comedian I've ever seen or heard. Certainly not to everyones taste but I think he is superb.
Andy Murray - Ok now I've said this he'll probably crash and burn next year but so far this year he's gone shooting up the rankings, beaten Tim Henman and kept his feet remarkably on the ground.

Re: Your National Treasures
Well, to carry on with the boxing, there's also Ricky Hatton. A talented fighter, and he seems to have his feet firmly on the ground (apart from when he's fighting, obviously )
Ewan McGregor. A talented actor, and does loads for charidee (Long Way Round must have been fantastic to take part in)., Oh, and he was Obi-Wan Kenobi as well, so he'll always get my vote

Dunno. I think the main reason is any of his material being broadcast would make the complaints about the Brass eye child abuse 'special' seem like a drop in the ocean.

His act is not overly TV friendly, in fact arguably not terribly theatre friendly. I saw him years ago and a few people walked out; but by heck he was funny!
Great, great magician too. Good call.

On that note, should probably add Chris Morris to the list, if only for 'Cake' (which gave rise to 'Czech Neck') and 'heavy electricity', let alone 'Noncesense'

Dammit, I forgot about Chris Morris! Any man who can get sacked from Radio One for announcing that Heseltine had died has got to be up there with the greats

Re: Your National Treasures
Sorry no one comes to mind..I cannot think of anyone that we would find it difficult to 'replace' apart from John Peel.

Sadly departed and therefore not eligible. Keep up with the rules Coggy
They don't have to be irreplaceable, just add to the general joy of life and be someone that we can be proud of producing as a nation.

Ellen Macarthur. Not only for her round the world races but for being the fastest star (non racing driver) in a reasonably priced car.

Steady on with that caps key!
But surely there must be someone that warms your cockles?

How about the English cricket team for presenting themselves to that nation absolutely newted after the Ashes. They behaved impeccably ie as most people would after such an achievement. Not sure it was wise of the authorities to schedule that bus tour quite so soon after the event though
