Re: Emergency Tax?!?

Unless all my staff are on emergency tax . 461L is a normal tax code.
edit- though I have just googled and it does appear that 461L is an emergency tax code for 2003-2004
edit-edit- just checked my code and it's 461L as well and I am definetly not on emergency tax!
.....so it looks like 461L is just a normal tax code

you aint getting your correct allowance i reckon , at a rough guess you are paying about 25% too much tax , you really need to get onto your wages dept and your tax office to sort it out , if you have overpaid you will get it back

Re: Emergency Tax?!?

The figures you gave would imply that you are on emergency tax. My payroll person says that you can have a normal code and still be taxed on emergency rates. Speak to your payroll staff ....sorry m8!

Re: Emergency Tax?!?

The emergency tax code is the standard single persons allowance (i.e currently 461L). If you join a new company they will put you on this until they get a proper notification from the Tax office unless you have a P45 from your previous employer showing what you code should be.
If you have paid too much then you should get a refund when your peoper code kicks in.

Re: Emergency Tax?!?

Just to clarify.... The Emergency tax code is 461L week 1 month 1.

As has been previously stated, any tax overpaid will be refunded when the correct code is applied.

NB this shouldn't happen if you are able to provide your up to date P45, unless you were previously on emergency code of course.

Re: Emergency Tax?!?

As the diplomat says, emergency tax is 461L week 1 month 1. This is to ensure that you pay the same amount of tax that someone on 461L pays no matter what month you start work.

The pay details that are quoted show that tax has not been deducted at the 471L rate but has been deducted at Basic Rate (22%)

If your code was the emergency code ( 461L W1/M1 ), your pay breakdown would have been as follows....

Gross 1085.00
Tax 134.80
NI 76.89

Nett 873.31.

If your tax code on your payslip is 461L, The only way I can figure this has happened is if you have provided a P45 which shows an underpayment of tax for the year to date.

This gets more confusing every time i look at it!!!

Ive been with my company for a month and a half so ive already had a payslip for the first half month, this came to £630 and i was taxed £34.70 (due to my first £350 odd being a non taxable allowance then the next £100 being taxed a 10% then anything after this at the correct rate of 22%) with a tax code of 461L M1, my tax paid to date was £34.70

In my second payslip, i have the tax code of 461L and been taxed almost a quarter of my wage which im sure is too much. My tax paid to date has now jumped from £34.70 to £927.10????

What the feck is goin on? am i destined to be skint forever?

Sorry if this is to complicated for a saturday morning you guys
