Police ban smoking
http://212.58.226.30/1/hi/wales/north_east/4426374.stm
So, what do you think? Should the police be above reproach? They aren't allowed to drink on duty so it this a natural progression? Are they being discriminated against? Are bans of any form an automatic discrimination?
This force aren't the first........

Surely not giving someone the chance to apply for a job because they smoke is discriminatory?

Re: Police ban smoking
I'd say so. Fair enough not smoking on duty but I can't see how they would stop someone when they are on breaks.
As long as their fitness meets the required standards, and I know some smokers who are exceptionally fit, I can't see how they could legally block someone from applying.

Re: Police ban smoking
I agree OrangeBird.... Besides, so many smokers work in a non smoking environment nowadays, so why can't coppers smoke at home or outside working hours (if the idea is to ban smoking from work)
In regard to this being a progression of not drinking on duty, a reason for not allowing drinking is because judgement could be compromised. Unless PC Plod is smoking the funny stuff, I donot see how having a drag on a B & H will compromise his ability to deal with crime.

Re: Police ban smoking
The police aren't allowed to smoke during work. That's nothing new, and thats acceptible, like they can't eat or drink outside of designated refreshment times.
However, what the police get upto, lawfully, outside of their work is none of their bosses business.

Exactly. I can't smoke in the office, never have been able to. But what I do outside the buildings, and in my own time is nothing to do with ntl, and I'm sure the same would legally apply working for the police. They'll be dictating what you can have for breakfast and how many alcoholic units you can drink on a night out next...

Re: Police ban smoking
A point to note is what happens to those already on the force that smoke? Are they going to be made redundant? the police force in question better check their legal funds budget for all the incoming law suits. maybe we will need another anti smoking slogan too. How about "smoking Increases crime"

I heard on the news this morning that the only effect this would have on 'current' smokers is that they'll no longer be able to smoke on the premises.

Re: Police ban smoking
I'm all for firm action against smoking but this method isn't helpful. How about applicants who smoke or are over weight will be offered police sponsered help on giving up and dieting. I believe traffic duty is sometimes the place fat coppers end up!
