My only concern is that when I use my debit card for payment, I swipe it, and the transaction is complete without a PIN number. Any body could now find a card, go to a self service till and swipe til their hearts content.

And the store is liable for the fraud (once you have reported the card stolen) and even if not, a pattern of misuse in self-serve tills would be something that the store / card co should have spotted - thus referred for further authorisation checks.

We tend to use the quickscan as sainsburys, packing as we go along etc.. pain in the backside when you get a re-scan though.

We used this system at a tesco in Basingstoke, kinda great, but you have to leave your shopping on the belt, so that it can be weighed, and if it doesnt match the weight in the system for the item you just scanned, it wont scan anymore and a light starts flashing.... member of staff comes over and fixes it and your away again.... weird really, im sure it takes longer!! Prefer the quickscan method myself!

It's OK when there is one person to scan and one to pack, but when you are on your own, to the person behind it looks like you have finished if you are packing up, so unless they happen to have their wits about them then they start. This is why I feel that they need a barrier as the main point of them is to be quick I think. So buying a few items and being on your own is the best combination to use them.....
