It's a tough call but I think this is a Lifestyle thread rather than Entertainment ... hence moved.
I saw a documentary on recently in which a transatlantic flight got into almost idential difficulties and glided in for a landing, IIRC, on the Canaries. Can't remember the details though.

It was a line in the movie, they initially did not tell the pax that they were running on momentum, some of the FFs soon noticed though.
