Traditional Kung Fu doesn't have coloured belts other than black and white. In practise, a student would be a white belt for 10 maybe 15 years until one day his Sifu (master) would award him the black.
This wasn't acceptable to most western cultures so colours were introduced.

I thought it did not matter in KF what colour you had on, but what side your sash sits does.
student = left
sifu = right
