Homework
How things have changed since I was a lad...
My nephew is in the second year of high school, (year 8 in the new fangled way) and the homework that his school is setting is abysmal.
Last year he was lucky (or unlucky, depending on your point of view) if he got one piece of homework a week and that was usually just finishing off work from classtime. One homework was just to bring a takeaway menu into school for art!!!
My sister and nephew were over my place today and he actually had some maths homework to do.
Back in my day, we were shown how to do something in class, then we were given homework from that. Not anymore.
He's been told to do it and if he did not know what to do, leave it till next week and ask the teacher.
It's relying on there being a parent who knows what to do. Not everyone got top marks or were good at every subject or the simple fact that it may have been a while since they were at school, so they may not be able to help. It's like home learning.
The annoying thing is that the primary school that he went to, set proper, regular homework, to get him used to high school. So it's been like a step backwards for him.

Re: Homework
Wish it had been like that (no/minimal homework) when I was at school! ;-)

Re: Homework
For the first 3 years I was at secondary school we were told to sepnd about 20 to 30 minutes on each piece of homework, you roughly got 3 pieces a night and then for the final two years it was mainly working on your coursework and was asked to spent about 40 to 50 minutes on your bits in question and again that was about 3 pieces of work but most of it was usually coursework.
Most people spent the minimal time on it they can (10 minutes) and you can usually do it then.

Re: Homework
Strange, my daughter who is in year 5 gets homework every night and my son gets one lot of homework and spellings each week and he is only in year 2. I should complain to your LEA or OFSTED about the standards or in this case lack of standards.

Probably a good one, if he gets HW.
Be interesting to see how much the kids on here get per night really.

Re: Homework
Schoolwork should be done at school, not at home. Kids should play when they are at home, not be stuck doing 'homework'.

Not true, it's the best time to consolidate what's done in class time.

Re: Homework
I used to get 3 lots of homework per night, about a half hour of each. Then in the 6th form it was less subjects, but more like an hour per subject. Plus we had spare periods during the day to study. The good thing was, I could go home, have dinner, then do homework for a while; it was better to do it after a break, and a rest, and especially something to eat. But 6th form was the pits, for many other reasons. Wish I'd gone to college instead.
