Re: Mexico - Playacar
By coincidence, my sister and her family were suuposed to be off to Playacar this coming weekend. They have had a nightmare time as their hotel was damaged in the hurricane at the beginning of July - but the holiday company kept telling them that it was open and all was fine - even though it was shut.
Two weeks before they are supposed to go, they phone up again as they have not had the tickets and are told the hotel is shut. This is the service you get for £4,000 from Thomas Cook (agent) and First Choice (travel co) apparently. Anyway, so now they are not going to Playacar (despite the fact that they are supposed to be meeting friends there on the holiday, and the fact that there are lots of rooms in the resort) as the holiday company think it's OK to plonk them in a hotel 30 miles down the road. Poor.
Anyway, sorry to take it off topic. I've not been to Mexico myself, but I have stayed in a Riu hotel in the Dom Rep and was over the moon with the place! The quality of the rooms was good, the beds comformatable, the whole place was immaculately clean (they even raked the beach every morning to get the overnight crap out of the way!) the food was pretty good, the staff were fabulous. The best bit is the set of optics in every room to dispese the included spirits - which is refilled every two days.
Hope you have wonderful holiday.

Cool thanks. Heard good stuff about Rui's. There are 3 Rui's in the Playacar complex and they all are 4*+.
I might check with the holiday company though about the hurricane damage. Not going till November, but worth checking.

Yes, I'd agree that Riu seem to have a good reputation We stayed in the Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun last year, and a very enjoyable experience it was too. They also have a relaxed attitude to hurricanes. We got the edge of Ivan. Whereas other hotels banned all alcohol, our hotel let us continue sitting in the bar, drinking and watching the storm outside.

Re: Mexico - Playacar
So, just over a week to go, and getting down to the nitty gritty...
- Can I use cash machines over there ?
- Are iPods going to be cheaper over there ?
- I assume Peso's are accepted anywhere ?

Re: Mexico - Playacar
You should be able to use ATMs.
You might want to buy your iPod in Dixons Duty Free - it's a hell of long way to take it back if your Mexican one goes wrong!
The Peso is the national currency, so yes. US Dollars are also very useful for everyday use. Don't forget that everyone has to pay BOTH an entry and exit fee to the authorities.
