Re: Birdwatching 2012

The geese have gone! Waah!

There was no sign of them on either lodge, or on the river. I don't know, the things they expect from those poor little goslings...unless they hitch a ride on mama's back, maybe. But I did get consolation prizes, viz. the coots feeding their (two) chicks, a rabbit made an appearance...and I finally managed to get a couple of pics of the local heron!

There's a spot on the former waterway where a temporary pool has formed, which presumably attracted it; maybe it thought there might be fish. I took a shot from a distance, but when I tried to get closer it took to the air. But it didn't go far and alighted on a fallen tree; another pic, and it then flew off.

Weather's good again, so I'll have another look for the geese, but I don't expect to find them. Oh well, there's always next year!

Re: Birdwatching 2012

(sigh) Nothing much happening this week. There's still no sign of the geese.

I'll try again later today; weather's beautiful again.

Talking Re: Birdwatching 2012

Well, my situation has changed: I've got a job! So I won't be going to the lodge anywhere near as often as I have been; I'm going to be, as Dr. Tolian Soran said in Star Trek: Generations, "rather busy"!

In fact I may be working weekends too, so likely it'll be a while before there are any new posts. But I'm not going away altogether! Mods, please don't delete this thread!

Re: Birdwatching 2012

Actually, I did - the site's near to woodland, and what did I see hopping along a path but a rabbit! From the size, a baby or young rabbit, too! Soooo cute!

There's a patch of wasteland between the woodland and the site, and I saw a couple of rabbits apparently playing on it.

As for the lodge, as of last Saturday a new pair of geese have arrived! At least I think they're new; the male has a ring, where neither of the pair who had two goslings did. Hopefully they'll nest and raise a brood of their own. The heron put in a brief appearance, and I caught a glimpse of a kingfisher.

Nice to hear that you are still managing to keep an eye on the wildlife. Hope the job's going well.

Re: Birdwatching 2012

The job's going well enough, but the travelling...ooh, don't get me started. Different parts of the day mean differing connections between Bolton and Runcorn East; I often have to wait the best part of an hour. Oh well, once I've done my CBTs and got a motorbike I can kick it all in the head.

I've seen quite a few rabbits at the Husco site, a number of bees and what I think was a coal tit.

Re: Birdwatching 2012

It will be worth it in the long run. The motor bike will make traveling a lot easier and you will be able to travel further afield in your spare time.

Rabbits, Bees and a Coal Tit. A bit of a let down after all the varied wildlife at the Lodge.

Re: Birdwatching 2012

True, but I'll take what I can get.

The point about the bees was that I was glad to see them at all, given the current trouble with Colony Collapse Disorder. They were making the most of these little pink flowers on a bush, no idea as to species.

Re: Birdwatching 2012

Now I'm on nights, as soon as I've adjusted I'm going to start going to the lodge again; I'll have time now. Watch this space!

Re: Birdwatching 2012

Nothing new on the lodge front, I fear; plus the weather's been awful so I haven't been down much. Oh well, maybe things'll pick up.
