The accepted usage (with a few exceptions) is "an" when followed by a word starting with a vowel sound, "a" when followed by a word starting with a consonant sound.
The exception is if the aspirant is silent, as in heir or honour - so in the your specific case, a hole.

Talking of 'correct usage' of things I only found out today that [sic] is meant to mean 'that's how it actually was/appeared/etc'. I always thought it was meant to be used when you were truncating a quote to highlight that you had done so..

Yup - usually used when you are quoting something, to show the mis-spelling was from the originator, not the quoter....
