Re: Brain Transplant

I wouldn't mind a nice young body with six pack, but then nobody would know it was me.

Knowing my luck I'd get done for trying to impersonate myself.

That's a bit different though. It's simliar to the face/hand transplants they are doing now.

Physically removing the brain and putting it into another skull is a completely different prospect

Re: Brain Transplant

John Varley has written some good SF on this (Eight Worlds series of stories, including "Overdrawn at the memory bank" published in 1976)- immortality by replaying "back-ups" of you/your personality into clones of your original body (only one instance allowed at a time, with any 'duplicates' terminated, which is sub-optimal if you are not the 'original', as you feel as if you are).

The stories also explore the impact of being restored into non-original bodies, such as animals (with modified brain pans), and sex-changes using this method, by changing the clone body by chromosome changes, rather than surgery.

You might enjoy Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. He's done 3 novels about mercenaries being 'transmitted' from war zone to war zone and place in 'customised' vat grown bodies. He too has fun with the above ideas.

ohh yeah - they were good books.

Immortality Inc was a good book too - (IMO) just a shame it got turned into that film with Mick Jagger in it

Also Peter F Hamilton - both the Night's Dawn trilogy and the Commonwealth Saga books have an element of the personality being saved indefinately. Well worth a read

I thought the same thing, especially when the OP fell into the same trap Karl fell into about the brain being separate to you as if you could have someone else's brain and still be you.
