Jusat be careful what wood you put in it 'cos some will turn your chimney into a tarry flamethrower... grabbing the attention of the Fire Brigade...

Yeah, dry the wood for two years minimum. Check

Shouldn't the chimney be lined with the metal liner?

We made our own.. One large empty gas bottle, a welder and some metal for a chimney.. Keeps the house nice and toasty..

As already mentioned make sure you use dry wood (not as in wet but as not green) as the sap doesn't burn to well then coats the chimney in creosote resin which burns really well.. We sweep the chimney once a year as well.
