Two drink-free days a week needed, MPs' report says

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16443240

Quote:
It is one of the recommendations in a report by the Commons science and technology committee, which is calling for a review of all government guidelines on alcohol in the UK.

It says there are "sufficient concerns" about the recommendations on how much people should drink.

The report has been welcomed by charities and public health experts.

Advice on the maximum units of alcohol that should be consumed was introduced in 1987 - 21 units in a week for men and 14 for women

In 1995, the advice was changed to recommend that men did not regularly drink more than three to four units per day. The figures were two to three units for women. It also says that after heavy drinking people should leave 48 hours for the body to recover.

The report questioned whether this "appeared to endorse daily drinking".

It said having two alcohol-free days would "would enforce the message that drinking every day should be avoided".

It also says there "could be merit" in setting a lower limit for older people in the same manner as there are more specific rules for children and pregnant women.

The idea of increasing the daily limit, was however, ruled out

Re: Two drink-free days a week needed, MPs' report says

Well seeing as the original "x units per week" advice was simply a number plucked out of the air, I feel that this advice is a bit spurious.

Obviously, if one is 'binge drinking' one needs to give the body a rest now and then. I don't think I'm going to panic about the fact that I have ONE glass of wine with dinner nearly every night, and might have an additional aperatif once or twice a week.

Re: Two drink-free days a week needed, MPs' report says

I read it as someone wants to dictate to us that we can't drink on a certain 2 days of the week.

and they can shove off

Well seeing l don't drink it will not affect me but l would resent being told what to do as most of us are responsible moderate drinking adults.

Teacup, storm, etc....

No one is "being told what to do" - people are being advised to have a break from drinking every day, because new research has shown previous guidelines appeared to confuse some people.

It's just like being advised not eat pies every day - I can't understand why people are getting so irate over common sense advice.

I love that MP's actually think they can make people who drink 7 days a week cut down with this recommendation

Nag,nag,nag from both governments.

For gawds sake let me be an adult and choose for myself..As for booze being cheap I can't say I've noticed. What I want to drink is not any cheaper not being a breeze drinker or a beer habitué.

I still can't afford gin, brandy or tequila let alone champagne..so I have a lot more days per YEAR without drinking ..

First they came for the smokers...

what next after booze? No salt on your crisps perhaps?

Bloody nanny-state quangos. I thought the new government was supposed to be lighting a bonfire.

Good, because we'd have to make up for the 2 days lost by drinking more after the curfew.
