New Spitfire squadron is being built
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...shire-16286762
Quote:
An Oxfordshire flying club is building a new squadron of 12 Spitfires for the new year.
Work has already started on one of the Supermarine Mk 26B Spitfires at Enstone Flying Club, near Chipping Norton.
When completed, each aircraft will weigh 810kg (1,782lb) and will be a 90% scale version of an original three-tonne Spitfire.

Twenty volunteers are constructing the first Spitfire, but more volunteers are needed to build the following 11

.
Brilliant It will nice see this iconic plane flying in greater numbers again

Re: New Spitfire squadron is being built
I wonder why they're only building them at 90%? Might make the cockpit even more cramped...

Re: New Spitfire squadron is being built
Oh dear.
Sis had to pay a shedload of money and hire a whole airfield, and sit on the end of a 4-year waiting list, to give her beloved hubby a flight in an original. Sadly she never got to see the thrill he had.
New Spitfires seem a bit second-best to me
I wouldn't like to see them completely disappear from the skies though - fly-bys and and all of that sfuff.
Nope - keep the ones we have and when they're gone then they're gone.

Re: New Spitfire squadron is being built
I'm a bit confused now. The original factory was Australian but the link on the website goes to a factory in Cisco in the USA.

It might be something to do with insurance?

A further grouping by aircraft size is made according to the wingspan of the aircraft.

Re: New Spitfire squadron is being built
I think from reading various links supplied that the scaling down is due partly to limited factory space and ease of assembly
Quote:
|
he could fully understand why we only produced 90% scale aircraft in today's world. Engine reliablity and horsepower was the main factor, with purchase cost and hanger space also being an issue

But if they are built here and fly here they will adhere to the CAA regs.
FAA is for US registered planes only.
Trust me I work in aviation.

In that case, can you tell us why these models are 10% smaller than the originals?
