World Diabetes Day
Hi
Just to let everyone know that today is World Diabetes Day 2011. You might think it doesn't effect you but apparently there are a few hundred thousand people in the UK with the condition that are not aware of it.
More information can be found at http://www.diabetes.org.uk/ or http://www.diabetes.co.uk/
For those who have this illness or those who have relations with it, you'll understand how serious an issue this can be.

Re: World Diabetes Day
I have had Diabetes for 9 years now. Still find it a pain in the rear end.

Very much so, most of what I have wrong with me is due to it, including going blind. Still - what you gonna do.

I wish there was more I could do.
Up to recently I didn't realise that Diabetes was such a major illness. I knew of it but it was just a word to me. With the number of people not being aware they have it, you'd think the Government would publicise it more.

Re: World Diabetes Day
My mother, the missus and our daughter are all diabetics. Support for them, and required annual health checks, are just not being done any more. "Cutbacks" they say.
The figures are MUCH worse than this charity reckons.

Re: World Diabetes Day
My Daughter has been diabetic since her 1st birthday, and the support we/she gets is still as good as it was in 1998.

Re: World Diabetes Day
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last Friday, but I've had the symptoms for about 6 weeks. My Doctor has put me on Metformin.
Anyone who's worried that they may have it, I'd suggest that they book an appointment with their GP to have a fasting blood test, and I highly recommend visiting the 2 links in Chris9991's post.

Re: World Diabetes Day
I was on Metformin originally but after a few years they decided it wasn;t working for me and put me on insulin. However I am still classed as type 2 due to their being a tiny bit of insulin still working naturally.
It is a pain having to check my blood sugar levels 4 times a day and also injecting insulin as I have a fear of needles so its still a challenge after all this time to administer it.
However I know I need to keep on top of it as there are so many complications that can arise from poor control. I already have a few changes in the back of my eyes and the circulation to my legs and feet isn't great at times and suffer sore feet due to this.
Have also suffered a couple of kidney infections and various other health issues including depression which can partly be attributed to the diabetes, but not the sole cause.

Re: World Diabetes Day
Thankfully, I don't have it. However, I have seen some of the effects of it first hand (I have family and friends who suffer), and it can be horrible.
