Tell Me About Manchester
I want to know it all, it's on the list of places to move potentially and I know there are a few people here who live there.
Things like schools, transport, crime, house prices, areas to absolutely avoid, etc, etc.
Please brain dump in this thread, any and all information welcome, I'll sift through as appropriate and I appreciate your time. All well and good reading other people's comments and official stuff but the only way to get the real deal is obviously through real people.

Re: Tell Me About Manchester
Good public transport infrastructure, hell to drive in and out of (like most major cities), housing depends on budget / willingness to commute / location of employment.

Re: Tell Me About Manchester
Checking on the public transport, it seems reasonable.
Willingness to commute is a non-issue - always.
Budget - say 250k?
Employment will probably be within the central business district looking at potential employers in my field, unless you'd like to offer me a job Hugh?

Re: Tell Me About Manchester
250k will buy you decent house in an OK area. Definitely cover a decent 3/4 bed garden semi and even a good sized 3 bed detached in the north of Manchester. If you want to give us an idea of whereabouts in Manchester you might be working we can give you a better run down. Imagine me asking you the same questions about London. The transport links into Central Manchester are quite good from the whole Greater Manchester region but if you are possibly going to work in say, the north of our region then having to get through central Manchester to the south can be a pain on public transport if you are not using the Tram routes.
The M60 ring road looks good if you have a car but it can be slow going on some stretches.
PM me for my phone number and I will gladly speak to you in person about my area (south Manchester) if you want locations kept private for the time being.
The links I gave you before were for education and housing but tweaking the information to a smaller area will help us help you.
Trendy area in the south is probably Chorlton-***-Hardy which although it has a nice buzz it has got very overpriced but it might appeal as there are a lot of younger families and lots of nice socialising options. Old Trendy is the Didsbury area, a bit more staid now but still has a village feel and is a bit more laid back.

I don't live in Manchester but I do know one crucial fact - don't live in Moss Side.

It's got a bit of infamous reputation as a location for gun crime and gang culture has it not?

Re: Tell Me About Manchester
So has most of London.. doesn't stop most people living there...
One side of Moss-side is probably best to be avoided (that's the side I was born in but this was a long time before Alexandra park estate came into being ) but the rest of Moss-Side, Hulme, Rusholme (the famous curry mile) and the surrounding areas are liveable..
For the budget involved I'd suggest going to outside of the Manchester area.. There's lots of decent commuting routes/means and will be a lot quieter..unless of course you want an inner city style of life.

Re: Tell Me About Manchester
Yep, I have family down that way and I can heartily recommend life in one of the former mill towns north of the city. The Pennines are a beautiful place to be.

Yes, but people most people would likely want to avoid Tower Hamlets or some of the rougher edges of Tottenham.

Damien, when you're in a hole mate ...
Besides, she's from Moss Side, she's probably packing.
