Chicken mistake!!
My Mrs is going mad at me!
I got 3 chickens about 2 months ago spent a fortune on pen, fencing and food, much to my frustration still no eggs!!
To make matters worst one of the chickens is now cockadoing!!!!!! Yes looks like we was miss sold a cockerel!!!! My Mrs has called the person who sold the cock cockerel and guess what they do not want it back, I live in a built up area and I assume cockerel are not aloud?
What’s the best thing to do with it I’m tempted to let my dog have/play with it but think this may be frowned upon?
I may ring its neck myself but not sure if I have the balls to, could I eat it?
Mrs has called the animal sanctuary they don’t want him!
RSPCA will they take him?
Any of you lot want him?
Please help?

To be honest I’m thinking of doing that, would it be safe to eat?

Re: Chicken mistake!!
Cockerels can be a bit tough when mature but up to a year old should be as tasty as a hen.

Re: Chicken mistake!!
Sharp knife/cleaver on a block of wood.. Just be prepared for it to be still flapping whilst headless. Other than that you could snap it's neck but unless you know what you're doing I wouldn't suggest it.
If you;re not sure you can hold it and chop at the same time then lay the knife over the neck and clout the back of the knife with a mallet/piece of wood.
One word of warning.. Not everyone can kill and then eat what they've killed especially when they've been looking after and feeding the bird. You may find that you end up with a wasted meal.
Can I suggest that you ask at your local pet-shop to see if anyone else local has chickens and is willing to take one..
As for a cock being allowed or not you may find that there's no laws about it and most of the time with double glazing the noise is not an issue. It also means that you can get fertilised eggs if you want to increase your flock in the future..

Great post thanks
I’m angry the lady we brought them off will not take him back! As an ex butcher I should just kill it but not sure if I have the balls!
Even RSPCA will not take it so killing it is my only option.
I have heard it will run around headless is this the case? I have kids who will not want to see a headless chicken!!

Re: Chicken mistake!!
Some do and some don't.. it will though probably move for a minute or two..
As I said try your local pet shop as they will probably know all the people in the area who have chickens and may be able to take one in.

Re: Chicken mistake!!
Sounds more like a cock up.
Company I used to work at joked about headless chickens running about with knives in their backs. Strange management there.

Have a bin and put it in their after the chop until it stops.
Why not let him live? I'd do nothing until the neighbours complian, then if they do hand them the knife.

Possibly not. The memory of my father trying to avoid a headless chicken running into him repeatedly whilst spurting blood still makes me chuckle.....
