Car Insurance Question

I am about to apply for car insurance. The car I will be driving was previously my mothers but we are putting it in my name as I shall be becoming the main driver soon. When applying for insurance they ask the question 'when did you purchase the car?', do I put when we purchased the car or when the registration changed over? It makes upwards of £150 difference! Why would that matter such a great deal?

Re: Car Insurance Question

What's cheaper?

Car insurance makes very little sense to me. Mine is cheaper to have more drivers on the policy rather than just me.

Cheaper if I put the date my mum purchased it.

Re: Car Insurance Question

If you were an angel, you'd put when the registration changed over.
you can probably get it cheaper if you put your mum down as a second driver.

and your mate, your girlfriend, her brother, and his dog.

Re: Car Insurance Question

It would bee cheaper the longer you have owned it as you would bee more familiar with a car you have owned for 10 years as oppose to 1 day and so less likely to have an accident. alough your cast is quite unusual as you were familiar with the car before you owned it you will have to put the date the registration changed as should you have a claim and they notice a difference between the registration claim and the date you said you brought the car they may refuse to pay out.

That's what I expected. Maybe I'll give them a ring and explain the situation.

Don't explain the situation, you'll simply be playing right into their hands and they'll end up saying you can only have the more expensive option.

It's a family car so I'd assume you could simply put the purchase date down from when your Mother bought it. So when ringing them simply enquire about the cheapest quote and ask if it's ok to do so. That way I feel you'd get a more honest answer
