Is nowhere safe any more?!?!
Yesterday I was sat in Bolton Central Library, reading. I happened to nod off for a few minutes.
When I woke up, some thieving scrote had nicked my rucksack! In a library, for hell's sake!
I have HAD IT with thieves! I had to buy a new bike after that was stolen the week before - and to ensure that no-one will steal this one unless they're carrying industrial-grade boltcutters or a bloody welding torch, I bought a rather fearsome-looking bike chain and lock from a motorbike dealer...it cost a third of what I actually paid for the bike! But if that's what it takes, so be it!
I am now more convinced than ever that some harsh punishments need to be reintroduced! I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANY MORE! If I ever catch a thief in the act, I will physically damage them! And as I wear size 11 steelies and weigh over 13 stone, very little of which is fat, when I give some scrote a kicking, they'll damn well know they've been kicked!!! And as long as I'm allowed to state my case - namely that, like many other decent citizens who would never stoop to theft, I am sick and tired of it and of the fact that nothing ever seems to get done about it - I'll quite happily go to jail for assault! If the police won't/can't do anything about this sort of thing, then we have to! What other choice do we have?!
How much more do those in government expect us to put up with?!
(Hi, Echelon, if you're reading! Up yours!)

Re: Is nowhere safe any more?!?!
good for you ,it is time that people stood up to thieving gits and remember that the police are there with our(the publics) consent and so is the government so if enough people stick together then things must change

I always lift a chair leg and loop the rucsac straps around it, even if I'm going to be wide awake and alert.
Has the library got CCTV coverage? Thye don't usually let people out of libraries with bags without checking them first to prevent theft of books.

Re: Is nowhere safe any more?!?!
Me, too, and rightly so (that I was warned, I mean - angry or not, I was out of order). But I can't summon up the energy now, even though I've been hit by thieves again. My new bike's been nicked - I fell victim to what I can only describe as a Good Samaritan scam.
Here's what happened: I was riding home down a back street and I heard what I thought was a cry for help. Being a decent sort, my calls for a bit of the old ultraviolence towards thieves notwithstanding, I parked up my bike and hurried round the corner.
I didn't think to lock it up. Well, you don't, do you, if someone needs help ASAP, and it takes several seconds with the chain and lock I had; that chain is heavy, and not the easiest thing to handle - plus it was in a bag on the back of the bike, secured with Arno straps, adding several more seconds to the time.
I went around the corner to where I thought I'd heard the cry - nothing. No-one there. I hunted round for a bit, but there was no sign, so I shrugged and went back to the bike.
Except I didn't, because it was gone. Along with the contents of the bag, viz. the £75 chain and lock (which will be useless to them as I've still got the key), the bike pump, the puncture repair kit, a spare bike chain and a new pair of waterproof trousers.
I can't even be angry about this. Now I'm just...tired. Tired and depressed.
I have made a decision: in the extremely unlikely event I ever find a woman who can put up with me, I am never having kids, not in this country. It's not a fit place to do that and I haven't the right to subject them to it. If there are any WWII veterans here, my next words may well offend you, but...WWII was fought in the name of freedom. Did that include the right to do things like this? There are times it seems to me that all those lives were wasted, if this is their legacy.

No offence, but at 45 years old, falling asleep in libraries and documenting your hardships novella style on the internet, I wouldn't be worrying about bringing up kids in this country.

Re: Is nowhere safe any more?!?!
You know, I'm not rightly sure. Everyone's got 20/20 hindsight. Like everyone else, I suffer from the odd lapse of sense - that probably was the best thing to do.
Oh well. Chalk it up to experience and get on with things, I suppose.

Re: Is nowhere safe any more?!?!
Fair enough you were aiming for a good deed and this on top of what happened before is annoying, but I would be hard pushed to think of a country where you could leave a new bike unsecured in an urban area and not have it nicked.

Re: Is nowhere safe any more?!?!
I know, I know. But it didn't occur to me at the time - the voice sounded like a young woman, and that could have meant assault. You don't think 'hang on, this might be a scam', you think 'someone needs help!'. This one I did tell the police about, because it occurred to me that they might have done this before. Not that it'll do any good, but still.
