MOT advice needed

This may sound like a silly question but it's not something i have done before
I have a Ford Transit that has it's MOT aniversary on the 5th jan .This year i would like to change that date to about now as i have a strong idea that work will be extremely rare from November through march untill the housing budgets come through so i could do without the extra expense just after christmas especially if work has to be done .Do i have to stick to the expiry date or can i have a MOT done any time

Re: MOT advice needed

From what I recall, to preserve the MOT date (05/01/2012), you can have your vehicle tested anytime after 05/12/2011.

Re: MOT advice needed

I think you could have it done earlier than the due date, but it would then only run for 12 months from the date the test was done.

Thanks ,

What i realy wanted to do was change the date to late summer when work has been plentyfull and i have some funds for repairs if needed ,maybe the way to go is to put the van into the garage i use for a pre MOT check and have the work done if any now and then just pay the £50 odd for the MOT in jan knowing it will pass

Re: MOT advice needed

you can't let it expire[and keep it on the highway ] but you can book an mot as early as you like ,if you do it now you will not preserve the date of the mot but there is nothing stopping you from starting a new mot at any time .

Re: MOT advice needed

just be careful they don't fix stuff that doesn't need fixing, a good example of this would be
your car has passed its mot but we advise you to fit new brakes [if the brakes where faulty it would have failed ] i took my car to a main dealer ship and listened to many people being advised to replace the brakes then the crafty git tried it on me, until i reminded him they where replaced last year. when i pointed out that the garage would have to foot the bill for any work on them he changed his mind and suddenly the brakes where ok [wich of course they where ]

I know what you mean ,i never use the dealership for MOT's anymore anyway I used them the first year i had the van and they failed the MOT because the front number plate had a dirty line across the top .Problem for me is that the MOT is a class 7 so i am limited as to the places i can take it but up to now the usual one seems pretty fair

Re: MOT advice needed

Say your MOT expires on the 1st of January 2012 the earliest you can test your car is the 1st of December and 2011, when you get the certficate it would expire after 13 months ie the 1st of Januart 2013.

There is nothing stopping you before then but it might only last 12 months.

Another thing, I had my MOT and was told that anything on the windscreen ie Sat Nav, phone holder can fail the MOT. Also child seats can cause a fail because they cannot test the seatbelts, I had the first two but they removed them before testing.

don't have a sat nav still using the old tech (A TO Z ) and get realy irritated when other fitters pull in the yard with a little peep hole around all the old news papers and takeaway cartons on the dash ,i like a nice clean cab and definately no child seats allowed with commercial insurance
