How can I pay a deposit safely

Putting a deposit down tomorrow on a car I am looking at. Its a private sale. But I cant afford it in full until 24th Sept.

The seller said he is happy to take a 20% deposit which is £230.

What would be the best way to do this and safety wise whats the best way

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Re: How can I pay a deposit safely

The answer is you probably could not absolutely guarantee safety with a private buyer (unless you knew them personally),as with a buisiness you would be able to use a credit card for a deposit which offers protection for anything over £100.

Best bet would be if you cannot pay for it all would be to see if you could borrow the money for a short while and take the car,as handing over a deposit to a private individual always carries a small risk i am afraid.

Re: How can I pay a deposit safely

The garage where I am getting my new car doesn't accept cheques anymore, unless there's a week given to clear. They've been taken in and so only accept debit cards for deposits, credit cards by agreement and with an additional fee.

Re: How can I pay a deposit safely

The cheque guarantee scheme ended on 30 June this year, so even a small-ish cheque for a deposit can't be guaranteed to clear. That may be why the garage no longer accepts cheques. However the bank charges for businesses accepting cheques have gone up a lot in recent years and a lot of businesses had already stopped accepting them for that reason.
