Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Hey all new to forum and just passed the telephone interviews for Access field tech for Virgin Media. Now they have invited me to a assessment day on the 10th October at Bellshill.
So far so good things have went well but now comes the hard part.
Is there anyone out there that has done this recently? What were the tests they wanted you to do? How about the dreaded presentation? (Been a prison officer and this scares me more then that job did) Do you need to use powerpoint or a flipchart?
Any help would be great thanks.
Kev.

Perhaps if you searched, you'll find there's already a number threads on the same subject. Do we really need to start yet another thread?

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Been through a couple of threads and people have asked numerous times in them for assistance but they seem to be drowned out in the conversation or people either succeeding or not. Felt it would be prudent to put my voice out on a fresh thread. (More chance of being heard)
I do have a full month to prepare for this and trust me I am googling like mad as I dont have a clue what to do. I am a ex Prison Officer so i was tempted to do a day in the life of a prisoner. But trying to structure it into 3 minutes with powerpoint and such is something I have never done before so I guess I am still asking for help.
As they say in Newcastle "Shy bairns get nowt".

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
do something about your days as a prison officer or a passion you have which can somehow relate to VM? workload seems to be big so cover it.

Surely the must be information in the pack outlining what the presentation should be about and what format they require you to use if any.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Guess too many negative responses coming back except for thenry.
I guess I am looking for how other people have coped with it/done it, because its new and alien to me i dont have a clue where to start or how to perform the presentation. Most people may think it laughable, i mean if some1 came at me with a knife i would be able to disarm them instantly but a silly stand up and talk to people and im a gibbering wreck.
Guess insight is the main thing i need, no one can write or perform this for me as it has to be my own but to go about it is what i am missing.
Thanks Kev.

Well only you can do this - nobody is going to do it for you.
As already suggested, try relating the prison job to something in the position you are going for.
For instance, how you treated the prisoners to how you would treat your customers...ironically they will become VM prisoners!! lol!
BTW - someone is spelt "someone" not "some1". There's no 140 character limit on forums!

No one has been negative as far as I can see and the are other threads on here and as I said above the should be something in the pack advising you of what they expect in your presentation.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
*sigh* the only reason I even created my user on the forums was due to lack of info on most of the threads I read. The problem with the threads I've read as stated previous is people ask for info and are never replied to.
All I asked from the start was how to go about doing said presentation, as I've never done one before. Instead of being kind like I would faced with a simple question and answering it I get go here or do this as I must be lazy.
Quite the opposite as I've gained everything else from these forms and other sites except the question above.
If u don't want to help then don't but don't come on then be awkward either just isn't needed. Also some1 is a small piece of text/Internet speak I have used for years makes typing quicker while getting the same message across. Doesn't even bother me that you try to poke fun at it hehe.

Was this answer really necessary. If you cant help, keep quiet, there is no need to be ignorant to new members looking for help.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
@niblic3rd
Hi Kev
This is MY opinion from doin social work presentations, but the way to a presentation is to have a start a middle and an end. (even in the 3 min time slot)
So how i would approach this would be to break it down into the 3 sections then to write some bullet points about each section, then expand the points to make a paragrah for each section. Keep it light hearted and not to clinical as u dont want to bore them for 3 mins.
Start by explaining wat ur job is and wat is involved on a day to day basis (the start)
Relate how ur experience/training/qualifications help to support the inmates, include some light hearted banter which relates to the visual aids u have used. (middle section)
For the conclusion u pull it together by relating how ur experience can be transfered to ur role as a field tech. (end section)
For ur visual aids, u could either use handouts/leaflets which could include a timeline of a prison offers role through the ages to reflect how times and the law has changed, this could be using light banter cartoon pics etc within the leaflet this is to ease the feeling of being watched as well and takes the pressure from u as they look at the leaflet. You could maybe use a flip chart in different coloured writing to catch their eye writing for instance prison officer, then making it like a spider chart use the sub sections for training/qualifications/role etc then u can point to this as u give ur presentation.
There are many ways to complete this task, and only u can judge how formal the presentation needs to be
Hope this gives u some ideas of where to start
Juliexx

I was just pointing out the fact that there are numerous threads already which discuss presentations.
Fine. I'll quit this thread now.

I inquired did they give any hint in the pack at all or even over the phone as to what they are looking for as I thought they would have included such information.
If you have that information then we are one step closer to what they require of you.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
@candy1567 thanks for the reply that has come as a great help as it gives me an idea of how to structure this presentation. I decided a few days ago about it being around the prison service/officer role. Once again thanks for that.
I got a basic overview from VM of what they expect on the day telling me i need to do a presentation 3 minutes long and i can use powerpoint or flip charts after that nothing much else and its more of need to know how to do a presentation. The idea of a presentation is just so alien to me and i hope to pull upon some of this forums members vast knowledge to give me an idea how to do it. Julie has given me a great start as now i am making bullet points and figuring out how to put this into a kind of story for the audience.
Kev.
