That is exactly what I have asked you all along and a 3 minute presentation should be fairly straightforward just remember to be clear and in control and even set up your watch on a desk to time yourself.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
A presentation is not straightforward for someone who has never given one before, its ok to say wat is the overview from VM, that will give u a basic idea of wat they are looking for, ie, time span/visual aids and tools to use but he was asking how to construct the presentation.
It doesn't matter if its 3 mins or 3 hours it is still a daunting prospect if u have never given a presentation before.
The main thing to remember is to speak clearly and try not to rush it to get it finished and most of all dont panic, everyone else on the day will be in the same boat as u, but u need to make ur presentation stand out for the right reasons that will get u noticed and make them remember u.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
i can see that you are eager and i went through the same process of trying to find info for my virgin assessment.
i know in the future there will be many more doing the same so just a bit off advise.
you will begin the day by telling the group about yourself you have about 30sec.
next thing they will ask you to do is describe a picture to a person sitting behind you without using any of the words they have listed. teh person sitting behind you has to draw the picture.
the next test will be a series of test questions which you have to write A or B from a multiple choice list. the questions are so easy they are intended to 5 year olds. ie who is heavier the fat person or the skinny person.
the last thing they ask you to do is place a connecter onto some coax cable. make sure you push down on the cable cutter firmly.
the next thing you do is a group exercise which entails a stranded situation with 5 iteams which one will you have as most priority and which one will be the least.
now for the advise......go and enjoy yourself and try not to worry......even before you get there they have already decided who they want because a friend of a friend knows the manager assessing and has put a good word in. it is so obvious that it doesnt matter how good you are in the assessment, they will only interview 4-6 people out of around 30 people. remember you will not get interviewed if you dont get through the initial testing. i have never in my life seen a process like this which picks the thickest people on earth. the group that were succesful couldnt even talk properly never mind spelling their name but for some reason they were succesful. if you know someone that works for virgin ask them to put a word in and i guarentee you will be successful. the assessers have let down sir branson and all the potential candidates that could have made an positive impact on the company. you will walk out of the assessment asking yourself one thing....."i shined in every task but i cant understand what has just happened why am i standing outside in the rain and why have i not got an interview" you will be bewilded
on a positive note if by any chance you can get past the dumb arses and the best mates friends recommendations then it is an amazing company to work for. one person made 54k last year as a field tech. lots and lots and lots of perks and money to be made.
i am writting this for all those who work hard to prepare for these types of interviews so you can walk in with a better idea. i wish i had read my thread before i went. hope it helps.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Hey there thanks for the reply, just got a couple of questions.
When did you do you assessment? and was there not a presentation involved?
Because its really the presentation that is giving me the worries not the day itself.
Thanks, Kev.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
i went on friday 16th sept 11. there was no presentation. but i suppose every assessment is different slightly to stop people reading up on places like this and being one up on others.
just advise but one of the competencies is custoemr service so right down what you believe is good custoemr service and some key features on a bit of paper then you will already have the information. if they ask you to do a presentation then they will give you 10mins to prepare one.
i hope you get it but do not be disheartened if you dont. youll understand why....because it is all a fix. just go in prepared and nothing will throw you

when and where is your assessment day being held....do you know anyone in the business. how old are you. the reason i ask is because i got the impression that they do not want anyone with more than two brain cells i think they like to mould their recruits. the younger the better.....if you want my advise....just be as thick as you can then you may be in with a chance. you'll find that the people who ask alot about how much money do i get and i cant cancel my holiday to butlins and the ones that break all the interview rules have a good chance. make sure you tell me how it went as it would be nice to compare notes....its a same because if you get in they really look after you.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Bellshill in Scotland is where its being held. Im 29 so still some molding to do not completely set in my ways, unsure if I can act thick lol as I like to know what I am doing I am very meticulous in my approach to something so I like to prepare which is why the thread started. here is a little bit off a document I was sent from Virgin about my presentation:
We’d like you to
Prepare a short presentation on any subject of your choice, which should last for 3 minutes. It can be about anything from discussing your favourite cheese to your love of Engelbert Humperdinck! The format can either be a powerpoint presentation or flip chart. You should bring all powerpoint presentations with you to the Assessment Centre on a memory stick and you need to ensure they’re compatible with Word 97.
So it seems things are different for me. Lol still bricking it. In all honestly due to most people being Scottish and me being a Geordie im hoping to stand out from the crowd as most people like a Geordie accent. I plan to use it as a ice breaker when starting my presentation basically by introducing myself and hopefully using it to my advantage.
kev.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Wouldn't mind seeing how you went about your presentation, rather do something of my own so I know what I am going on about. All about getting an idea of how to present the presentation lol. I am really useless it seems when it comes to this.
Don't take this the wrong way but I don't like to pass around my phone number and such over the net, kinda been burnt through the likes of eBay and other sites so if u can PM some stuff that would be a great help.
Thanks Kev.

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
look at the sheet they sent you in regards to competencies and judge your presentations around that......if you dont have the experience then the www has loads of info. you either know how to use powerpoint or not if not then just do it on a flip chart. make it enjoyable and allow the assessers to find out a little about yourself....if in dout do a presentation about your hobbies.......ie diy which relates to what they are looking for...i can go one and one about what they may be looking for but they are the only ones that know......like i said they want somebody they can mould.....it does'nt matter how good you are if they want you then they will get you......give it your best and if you are successful or not then put a review on just to give others a helping hand.

If you are scared of that, why are you applying? You'll be all over the place if you get the position!!

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
I will write a review after Friday.. Does it seem strange that they have not mentioned a presentation?
Does anyone know if there are any certain skills they ask about? I.e telephone wiring or NRSWA etc?
Thanks in advance,
Damo

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Dont listen to all the comments about only mates getting in, and friends of friends, I dont know a single person who works for virgin and I went through the recruitment process that your about to embark on, Ive been offered the field tech role and have a start date in the next few days, just be yourself and think how you would like a VM techie to be if they came to your house, like I said, I do not know of a single person that works for virgin and I made it, so can you.
Ta,
stewey

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Thanks, that's good to know stewie! What was the structure of the day if you can remember and is there any practical skills I will need to demonstrate I.e connecting telephone or coax?
Also how long after the day did they let you know you had been successful?
Thanks again

Re: Virgin Media Assessment day - Access Field Tech
Its quite a fun day,
1st was the usual introductions, and then a presentation and video about virgin and more specifically the role.
Followed by,
Team building exercise,
Technical Test how to wire a telephone socket up,
3 min presentation,
I heard within a week, that I had made it through to the next stage which was a one to one interview at my local depot, went to that and then 1 week later got the good news I was seeking.
I must stress that the structure if your day could be completely different and the times taken to get back to people vary quite a bit, these guys are really busy, so just give it your best shot and be honest and sit and wait for updates, dont get too hung up on the finer details and try to enjoy yourself, if its meant to be its meant to be.
